Rusted out quarter panels...need ideas

Glass it !

Nah! I prefer steel. When I get done, this will be a completely rust-free, STEEL Gen 1. These trucks are getting harder and harder to find in that condition.

Driver side quarter panel installation

Well, the driver side panels are in and welded and the whole job including cutting out the rusted areas, fitting and cutting the replacement panels and welding only took me 5 hours total. I still have to take care of some minor adjustments and then it's time for filler. The panel just behind the driver door was a complete pain to install, the bends were not exactly where they should have been and I had to make some minor adjustments to make the panel fit. As it is right now, the bottom was not bent correctly and you can see that the lower transition isn't perfect. I should be able to hide the tight radius with some filler to make it look a little better but overall I am really pleased that the old girl has some new skins and that all the rust is history!!
Tomorrow is adjustment and filler day, I'll post some shots of the progress, I'm hoping to have the body completely done and ready for primer by Sunday.

That's really looking nice. I wish I had the skills to do stuff like that. I guess I have to just keep learning little by little. I wish more people regarded vehicles as vehicles rather than as cheap consumer items.

There is seriously a LOT of work a head, to get the bodylines to match up ..

steel or fiberglass ? .. glad you like the steel !! kuz U gots lots of work to du !!

I think alot of us would buy your stuff, but the shipping down into the states kills us. You can get rust free quarters and rockers from yoda jim for less that 300 shipped coming from one end of the country to the other. If you could find a cheaper way to ship it would increase sales like crazy. I know I want your stuff but cant afford everything down in ohio.

I hear ya .. but unfortunatly .. shipping is out of our control , We get some awesome freight deals ,and aways pass them onto our customers .. (gezzz you should check out RETAIL pricing ) its the best we can do .

sorry brutha , but sometimes the truth hurts , anyways , who cares what I think , as long as your happy with it ..

your going to finish welding though first right ? before you do any plastic filler ? you have to "stich weld" all your seams , otherwise they'll just crack on ya down the road .. an you dont want that !

the differance is , I knew/know this product , as we use to sell it , and I know exactly how it fits .

Thanks for the support Whitey. And yes, I imagine he did just sabotage a future sale or two with those remarks. What he fails to comprehend is that this started as an $850 truck and my budget is only $5000 for the entire project.
If he was willing to cut out all the rusty areas, supply all the necessary fiberglass panels and install them, strip the rest of the truck, fill, sand, prime and paint the truck for the $758 I currently have invested then by all means show me how it should be done. If not he should simply sit back, read the posts and save the criticism for someone else because I won't waste my time getting into a pissing contest over something that is truly insignificant.

well my momma alway told me .. you get what you pay for !!! .. so NO .. I absolutly could NOT do it for what you have stated your costs as ..

as I mentioned .. My shop dropped this line of product a long time ago , and I do not recommend it , nor even suggest using them. I will never use this product again .. Most definatly , if anything , my customers want honesty ... and only honesty I will give them .. If I said this looks great .. I would be lying , this, I would be more woried about then my previous comments ..

I recently purchased my first 4Runner (95 SR5) and need to replace the quarter panels. I'm looking to go the way of fibre glass for the reasons slacker's pointed out - ease of install, but also to prevent further rust in the same areas.

I tried giving Toyota Fibreglass a call earlier this week and the answering machine states they're no longer taking any more orders because of a back log. Does anyone know if this is referring to parts orders? Or just parts orders + installs?

I'm kind of a sitting duck right now without the panels, as I'm also replacing the tailgate at the same time. I live in Calgary and haven't been able to find any 4Runners with the parts I need - I'm hoping somone in the community can help me out, even if it's with some direction for other options I may have. Thanks in advance!

Let us have some pictures. It depends how bad the rust is.

The repair can be as simple as purchasing two new front fenders and cutting out the wheel arches, which is a common practice and can be made to look really good. If the rust has eaten much further past that then you cannot do much more than find a donor truck and wait.

You might do best to find one of the people around here who part out vehicles. It's not terribly hard to cut out body panels.

Upthread there was controversy over the Wolf steel parts. I ordered rockers from them in 2011 and they sent the wrong ones. It cost too much shipping to send them back.
