Rusting front crossmember

Frame rust is not uncommon but severe rusted out front crossmember ( the frame part under the radiator) on 2004 4runner that lives in garage is little extreme I think. Does anyone else have this issue? I'm surprised Toyota did not offer some protection for this frame part like they have in 5th generation. I hope I don't have to have bodyshop welding new member in place but it is in sorry shape. What gives?

Just because it lived in a garage does not mean it will be rust free. It was neglected - which is why it rusted so bad. Just a LITTLE tlc is all that's needed in the winter to remove salt and prevent rust.

Wowzers. Even the front skid plate is rusted through.

I wired wheel the surface rust off my skids and cross member this spring. Covered it back up with Rustoleum undercoat.

Not as bad as this one but it might in few more winters:

I had to replace the same cross member on my "03 SR5 two years ago. New cross member cost about $260, and another $250 to have the bad metal cut out and new welded into place and then weld new cross member in place. Sold it a year later. Now having all kinds of rust issues on an '03 Limited I now have. Upstate NY winters are tough on 4runner frames and associated underneath parts.
