Rustoleum Hammered Metal Limited Bumpers and Cladding

Ok, so I know the obvious answer is to PlastiDip first, so I can peel it off if I don't like it, but i'm looking for basic opinionated input first before I make even that investment. (several cans of PlastiDip+ several cans of Hammered will still cost a bit)

So Archie is my '99 Limited. He's Black with Topaz Metallic cladding and bumpers. I'm not the biggest fan of the Topaz, and my cladding and bumpers are a bit dinged up (not complaining; I got Archie for $4200 with only 132k on the clock)

I really like the look of a complete glossy black 4Runner, or the Black/ Thunder Cloud. The Hammered versions of this seem to be Glossy Black and Antique Pewter.

I'm going to remove the bumpers in the next few weeks and see if I can knock some of the dings out of them, and I'd like to 'clean up' the paint while I'm at it. Obviously, I'll paint the cladding to match, but I'll just tape off the rest of the truck while I do that.

Anyone have any experience/ opinion with using Rustoleum Hammered on the just the bumpers and cladding (running boards too)? I can't find many pictures online of Hammered vehicles, and the ones I CAN find are the entire thing, which looks a bit odd.

My basic reasoning is this;
To 'properly' fix it, I'd need all new cladding and bumpers. Slight dings and scratches in all of them. I don't mind buying new(used) bumpers if need be; they are actually pretty cheap. It's the cladding that concerns me, because it costs a lot more. Can't even Bondo it, because it's plastic.

The Hammered would (should) cover all that, and if there are ever any new blemishes, I can just touch them up with more paint. It also might give it a pretty neat Hoss look.

I might at least buy a can of Hammered and paint some scrap metal to hold up to Archie to compare.

Any opinions?

I'm interested as well. I want to know what the hammered looks like when it's applied. I stuck with bed liner to cover minor bumps and bruises on my bumpers and its held for years now.

I'll definitely post some before and after pictures if I go ahead with this. I like the idea of bedliner, but I also like the glossy. There's not a glossy bedliner is there? (I've never seen one.)

I've used the hammered stuff on a metal table, good looks and durable not to mention the feel is cool too.

Just like house painting you can't decided on, do a good sample and hold it against your truck in different light, shade so you get a good feel for it before all the hard work of taping/covering. Luck and as stated show us some pics. :cowboy:

Idk if you've used plasti dip, but it never really peels off like it does on youtube. I would avoid it if I were you. Prep and primer the surface, use rustoleum or other good quality paint and you'll be much happier in the long run.

I've used PlastiDip before on plastic (cleaned it real good with rubbing alcohol first) and had to remove it later. I was actually very surprised because almost ALL the PlastiDip came off in one piece. I think people say that the thicker it lays down, the easier it is to remove. I didn't paint OVER it, though.
My biggest concern is all the dings and scratches, which is the point of the Hammered. Otherwise, I would probably go the '$50 paint job' route.


Well, like I said, it'll be at least a few weeks before I move on this. I'm gonna get my brakes and LBJs taken care of first. I'll definitely be sure to post pictures, though! Thanks, guys!

What about finding a place that sells color-matched spray cans of toyota 202 black? That way it will match (probably closely) the body.

I thought about this as well. Oreilly Auto sells Duplicolor 202 paint for pretty cheap, but this won't fix the obvious scratches and dents in the actual body itself.
If it was just a matter of repainting and not 'repairing' I'd go this route. Or maybe even simply Rustoleum Glossy Black, seeing as how Glossy Black is pretty much Glossy Black. So says my hood actually. Just make sure to prep and buff, and it's a perfect match.
