I am a bit disheartened. Over the past 6 months i have installed savage skids and sliders and a shrockworks front bumper. I'm not so much worried about the skids but the sliders and bumper already have chips and rust all over and I haven't even had it off road yet. The damage is just from daily road driving.

I painted the sliders with self etching primer, rustolium paint and clear. The bumper was painted at a body shop by a buddy. I paid a lot of money for this stuff and i feel like it is already falling apart in very short order.


What to do? Just touch up paint, powder coat? I don't know. I want this stuff to last a long time and look good but at this rate the front bumper is going to be chipped to pieces and rusty everywhere.

Missing some info and pictures would really help. There is nothing noted as impact/chip causing the paint to flake/chip off.

Sounds like the paint prep and application are the cause. Properly prepped and applied paint sticks great, and does not chip or flake off randomly.

Solution is a lot more work now. Total removal and start again with bare metal base and full prep and re-application of primer and paint.

I use rattle can Rustoleum paints for all kids of fixes including entire panels painted...never have it come off or chip. Actually holds up better then factory paint...but thats because it's thicker 2-3 coats (properly prepped each coat) and is actually paint not a micron thick coating.

Where's the primer? It looks like that's just top coated.

No question those are rock chips, and I don't know how long the base metal has been exposed. If that rust showing was present or showed up quickly the base is your problem. I don't know if you are from one of the rot salt areas. At this point it would not hurt to ding it with a screwdriver to see what it looks like under or how well it holds up.

Based on the picture and the amount of damage/chipping....sorry but I'm sticking with my original belief. Maybe someone has a better/less work solution, but those usually don't work if the base is not done correctly.

That bad chip has been exposed for about a month and had road salt and ice on it. It appears that all the chips go strait to the bare metal and get surface rust pretty quickly.

I suppose to refinish either with paint or powder this will need to be blasted clean to bare metal? If so what type of blasting media and expected cost??

Almost any media will do in the right grit, be it glass beads, plastic abrasive or crushed walnut...
