Rusty Rear Bumper

I have a 99 4runner with a rusty rear chrome bumper. Do I have to replace the whole thing or will it come apart so I can replace the middle portion? I can't afford a decent steel bumper yet.

If I can replace the center portion, where can I buy it?

I believe the 1999 4Runner's rear bumper is sold in three pieces..

The middle section can be picked up from PartsTrain.com, its an easy site to navigate. I think it calls the other two pieces Bumper Ends.

You could also try ebay. But yeah, the 3rd gens rear bumper is in 3 pieces.

If you buy any bumper (aftermarket or toyota) you want to consider coating the inside of it with spray on bedliner or undercoating.

Examine the bumper and you will understand why it rusted out. There are places that catch crap and let it sit there.

The rear bumpers commonly rust on the 3rd gen's.

Although now I may need another one since my teenage daughter backed into her freinds Mustang with it the other night.
Might change the front one to since it is showing signs of rust also. Rear one is easy to change as long as you buy new bolts from the Toyota dealer.

What do ya do with the WD-40? I'm noticing some rust on the rear bumper of my 97 SR5, and if I can fix it myself, I'd rather do that, but I'm prepared to have to buy a replacement if need be.

But then, would I install it myself? All comments are welcome - I'm pretty unsure what I should do here. Most I've done is replaced a tail light on my own lol

WD-40 to help loosen the old bolts, prefer PBlaster myself but to each their own.

Woohoo, managed to find a replacement, all three pieces, for only $350. I thought I'd need $600 for Canada. Now I have a job for the weekend. Thursday and Friday, liberal amounts of nut buster, and Saturday go at the bolts with a torch.

Finally put the finishing touches on the re-beautification of my Runner. It'll look like new after this.

I bought a cheap aftermark front bumper from some place in B.C. It started to get pinhole-type rust spots after only a few months! A little chrome polish cleans it up, and a little oil should help keep the rust away. I had my 4Runner undersprayed before winter, too.l

LOL, nut buster, it's what my wife does when she finds out I've been spending more money on the Runner. Actually, I forget who makes it, but my garage gave me a can of it. I have two other brands, as well, so I'll probably use all three and hope for the best.

I'm getting them from the junk yard ordered new. They get them from some supplier here in Canada. They of course didn't have any salvaged rust-free ones.

I'm going to treat the back of them like mad, and probably figure out what to protect the chrome with. My old pieces, from right to left, are dented, rusted to hell and repainted and rusted again, and having a big rust hole. The brackets and the rest of the rear undercarriage are in decent shape for Canada. Damn 4Runner bumpers.

I had a helluva time getting my front one off and back on... half of the bolts were totally rusted, so I had to cut them off. I didn't really know what I was doing, so the whole job took me like 6 hours. Hope your job goes faster/easier than mine!

I picked up a third party primer-black bumper in 3 pieces (sides and middle step) and also a primer black front bumper inlay off ebay and am very pleased. I have purchased from Autos Depo and carpartswholesale. Can recommend both. Going to have to spray some bedliner on the insides though. Good idea.
