Rusty rear housing swap? Good deal, and info??

Found this on Craigslist. I assume this is a good deal? What all is involved with swapping. My housing is horrid and has had a leak for sometime coming from the top of the housing on the side where there would be the diff cover on most axles. Is it as simple as pulling my shafts and diff and rebolting them in. The ad is below. Thanks as always.

I don't get it, Tacoma's are leaf sprung and 4runners are coil sprung. I'd stay away as it might not be a direct fit.

I'm just as confused as you but it says its set up for coil springs, weird.


OP, I would go take a look at it and see what the deal is but you should talk them down to at least $75.

Just ask for pics of it. That should tell the story.

The swap is very doable, and $100 is not a bad price for a clean housing. Salvage yards around Boston were charging 2-3x that for just the housing, not including the ABS sensors.

There are several of us that have replaced the rear axle.

Now that I think about it, Tacomas are leaf sprung, haha. I would assume then that it has been a Tacoma axle and not a 4Runner but has been set up for coils. Are the Tacomas the same axle minus being originally leaf sprung? Also, someone posted a link to an axle from a 97. Are there certain cutoff points. I know that I need ABS. Can I get an axle from one as old as a 97?

The only differences are E-locker vs non E-locker and ABS vs non ABS 96-02 will work for you.
