Sad day for the 4Runner...

Sadly I don't have the time for a build thread for you guys but try to post as much as I can but I have a 99 v6 5 speed with bilstein 5100 fronts on 99 stock springs with superflex coils in the rear that going to be paired with 7100s as soon as they arrive. Also on 285s with 1.25 wheel spacers and black steelies. Today I was cruising to my girlfriends and was in a line of 4 cars going along at 50 when the one in front slows down to turn into their driveway and the Subaru in front of me slams on their brakes and gives me little time to stop so I swerve to avoid them when the car in front is commits to their turn so I swerve again to avoid them, just missing them, and go across their driveway and jump roughly 7-8 feet into a 4 feet deep ditch. Aftermath...busted my drivers fender up, bent a rim leaving me with a flat, destroyed my inner fender well, and destroyed the plastic on my front bumper. Luckily no one was hurt and relatively minor damage for what I could've been. Bummer man, at least no one got hurt and its seems to be relatively minor damage so chin up and time for a aftermarket front bumper :)

Yea thankfully it's minor and if the rim wasn't dented I easily could've drivin it home. Going to tear into it Monday and straighten things out and double check. Definitely think it's tundra brake time though. Good reason to finally do it haha. Aftermarket bumper isn't going to happen yet unfortunately. I'll make my own first most likely; my family owns a shop and we have a tube bender and two welders

No good news. Drivers side tire is pushed back an inch and rubbing on the fender when it wasn't before. Think the frame may be bent because the frame paint is all chipped on the drivers side. Found a rust free 2000 for 3500 bucks that I'm thinking about buying and swapping my lift over and trying to get some of my money back parting out or selling for off-road or something.

That's a steal... I'd poke around that "rust free" area and look for signs of painting over rust. Never heard of "rust free" in Maine =D

sorry to hear about your 4runner

That sucks. Looks like my 4runner.
Since we have the same color 4runner I might be able to buy some stuff off of you if you are willing to ship and pull them off for me. For example the passenger side mirror... let me know. I have family up around Maine so I might have to make a visit if you can't ship.

Following too closely will get you every time...

That's what i've learned, unless we have the tundra brake upgrade, even the limited's larger brakes can't stop very quickly (I can only imagine what the regular brakes are like). I've just gotten into the habit of braking early - like an old fart - what a minute.... :cowboy:

Following too closely will get you every time. Hope she fixes up ok buddy! Glad you're safe.

Yeap! People always need something like this to wake them up.

To the OP just remember you should always have space to avoid. You where too close for the speed you where traveling.

Good luck on the fix.

Yeah stock brakes suck on 285s. I actually was a good 3 car lengths back but 55 to 0 is pretty hard to stop for any vehicle in that distance.

55mph you should have 5.5 car lengths. I know its hard but I did he same thing you did. Instead I just went into an open grassy median on a highway. After that I never tail gate. But once you do this you always have people on your ass gating you. It sucks but worth it.

when i clicked on the link, i was expecting something worse. but at least no one was hurt and damage doesnt seem to be that bad

yup... once you have a close call like that you'll learn to keep your distance. as for people tailgating there are alot of those here in SoCal... bunch of dumb asses
