Safari - Snorkels

Great, I was just looking at those pages. Being Sunday it will have to wait till tomorrow. It looks like it will take a week to ship at be at price range of $391.00 ($5.00 Shipping surcharge + shipping, $30-$40.00. So yes, its up there.

I have a good friend who works for an auto body repair center here in Denver and could be the perfect person for the job. I'll keep you posted.

based on my unscientific research, i "think" with a bit of heatgun work you could definetly do it.

you would have to bend the pipe forward 10 degrees using a heat gun.

there's a trick that moonshiners used to use to bend copper pipe.

they used to fill the copper pipe with fine sand to avoid kinks in the copper. my plumber friend told me it works on plastic as well.

so theoretically you could fill the snorkel with sand and bend it to avoid kinks in the plastic.

That's a great idea. He will be able to tell me straight off the bat if its doable or not. I don't want to start cutting/bending/heating $500 of plastic if it cant fit!


I guess I could just go to home depot and get sum' rain guuutter, if all else fails. LOL

there's a guy who did the "internal" snorkel mod where he used ABS plastic pipe to route air from inside the cabin to the engine.

slight power loss but i think it worked really well.

Yeah it's the battalion commander's vehicle...I should be able to knock this out in day two. There's also a few Prados floating around with the snorkel already on them.

Okay, first issue:

The location of the AM/FM antenna on our 4runner's is in the way for the prado safari snorkel.

I am getting a buddy of mine who's close with an ARB rep to see in his eyes if it is at all possible and if so, what he believes it will take to fit one to our 4runners.

and i'd venture a guess its way easier to relocate the AM/FM then it is to find a solution for the snorkel.

I replied in RiDE's thread about a similar concern about Antennas...but I think you're over thinking the antenna thing. 1) I don't believe the AM Antenna uses the FM Antenna...It might be internal. *MIGHT* is operative.

Secondly...what if we're looking at the wrong part to be modifying if indeed the Antenna is in the way? What if We really wanted a replacement Driver's Rear Glass with Antenna in it? Thoughts?

I highly doubt the ARB Prado snorkel will look right as the fender lines and windshield slope are different then 5ths. You can only do so much with heating up and remolding polystyrene plastic before it looks like crap.If they were cheap ,ya give it a try ,but they are pretty expensive piece of plastic for experimenting.

I have the Firestik antenna mod on mine too.Bunch of FJ guys running them..... Firestik II as FM antenna - Toyota FJ Cruiser Forum

I have one installed but hav'nt hooked the splitter up yet to see if it works for both CB and radio as I have to pull my stereo out to get to the antenna lead.

Plus now , I have to go into the fender now as my lead at the antenna bottom connection came loose and just get static now.:ybrick:

The way they have it connected inside the fender is not very secure as a bunch of us have had it turn and break the connection . I just tightened it by hand,no wrench involved and it broke .I'm going to work on a fix so it doesn't happen again on mine while I'm in there.

You might be on to something as to just add a FM antenna someplace else and use the Firestik just for CB. That is if the splitter doesn't work.No body makes one in the glass though for 5ths but FM antennas are fairly simple with an aftermarket booster and can be hidden other places. What's AM????..... and rarely listen to FM anyway with Pandora and a loaded 160GB ipod tied to my Pioneer and another 48GB available to stream from my phone.New music on the phone and my classic rock on the ipod.

some good news...

Having waited a few days to hear back from multiple sources, we have reached a good median. ARB are going to send me a snorkel of which I can return if it doesn't fit (just pay freight). The three techs over at ARB and one from safari snorkels said that the Prado line wise is not too dissimilar to the 4runner and COULD be a very close fit, though they said it will look a little funny due to its size. Where as the 100 Series Safari Snorkel would look less obnoxious but not fit as close.

They said if it meant a hybrid between the two snorkels and it could fit , they would look into making a kit for retail for our 4runners through ONE chosen shop.

There is a guy who I don't know the name of, but will try to find out, that is fitting ARB snorkels to the new 2012 Tacoma's here in the US under ARB's wing. This would hopefully be the case if it worked out for our 4runners.

So.... how long.... right now we are looking at a minimum of 2-3 weeks. I will keep you closely posted. Keep your fingers crossed
