Is there a reason why Safari refuses to release a snorkel for the T4R? I know FTS makes one for 5th Gens, but from the install videos I've seen they are pretty sketchy to get put on correctly and those are some pretty damned big holes you have to drill into the side based solely on a template.

5th gen ones are coming first, I've been running the prototype for almost a year now.
4th and 3rd are planned and coming out sometime after the 5th gen.
It's a common misconception that the only use for a snorkel is for driving through water.
A more practical use is to get cooler/cleaner air into the engine when doing overland convoys. Following a vehicle for miles on end on a dusty road can choke out an engine and make it perform less than optimal.

I asked the ARB rep at the Toytec Customer Appreciation Day in August and he said that Safari (the mfr) has a prototype for the 4th gens (theres a pic floating around somewhere on the forum) but ARB did not like the design and asked Safari for a redesign and it's not high on anyone's priority list. So we wait.....

They made them over a year ago, but a few people's opinions got in the way, like "that's ugly", "no one will buy that", etc. So then it got sandbagged while they worked on other Aussie-spec vehicles. Any option is better than no option.

My comment was about the post prior to mine for the 4th Gen. And yes, they were sandbagged, just like the bumpers.

I think it's a 5" diameter top now, increased for the new ARMAX thing. I don't know where you can get a prefilter that size.

How would the Safari snorkel be any different? That's not sarcasm, btw. I'm curious if I'm missing something but it seems like cutting damned big holes and drilling mount holes from a template is the nature of the beast.

Not true. Why? Your air is filtered regardless of the intake location. Your engine will get the same filtered air.
Next, cooler air. You are drawing from inside the fender in the stock location. That is outside ambient air temp, not under hood next to engine air temp.
So if you are following a vehicle down a dusty road for miles on end, regardless of intake location it would be beneficial to clean your air filter.
Snorkels, for a 4Runner application, would only help in deep water (I mean deep!) crossings. No other reason. Wait... they look cool, so that's two reasons.

They do help in dusty locations. They don't supply cleaner air to the engine, they supply cleaner air to the filter. The filters last a lot longer before needing replaced or cleaned.

Absolutely. I quoted and was responding to the poster who said it got cleaner air into the engine. Filter life was not the discussion lol.
I would hope that the Safari model would be a little more descriptive with the install process than what you saw in the video from the other manufacturer. It's not the hole drilling that bothers me, it's the lack of solid directions which could result in a giant mistake if the snorkel doesn't fit properly.
