Safety Recall - Smart Stop Technology

We're doing them now, though ironically I haven't played with a 4Runner yet after we've done the BST on them. I'll try and get my hands on one post BST and see if it's as bad as the Corollas. Basically from other people I have talked to that have dealt with the BST, its pretty much the same "kill the engine for a few seconds after you release the brake pedal" in all the vehicles. That's where I am concerned it could cause issues, because IF a customer rode the brakes and/or tried to accelerate and push the brake y accident activating the BST function, then the vehicle would not be able to effectively accelerate for a good few seconds. Thus, potentially a person behind them might not know this and ram into their backside assuming they were able to accelerate properly.

You're welcome to bring it over, but I probably won't be the one doing the BST (not that its difficult, its just an update, its just "gravy" work that the more senior techs typically get dibs on.) But personally I wouldn't bother getting it done, much in the same way I declined the pedal chop 90L recall (I was going to get a new accelerator, but the new ones are made shorter :crybaby: )
looks like ill pass on this then. i kinda use both pedals on extra steep hills.

EXACTLY!!!

This is why I REFUSE to have it reflashed. I was at the dealer last week getting an alignment (and new warrantied tires) and they asked. I told the service dude (who kinda knows me by now), "If your tech touches my computer, I'll rip his balls off".............. He responded by smiling.

lol, :iagree:

I follow people all the time that can't seem to figure out that you can't drive with one foot on the brake and the other on the gas pedal. Just don't understand how they made it through drivers training, and life! It is so hard on your brakes, and impossible for people behind you to tell what they hell you are actually doing!
With that being said, I do occasionally need to push both offroad, but I feel that is a completely different situation so I will never take mine in for this reprogramming either. Thanks for the heads up!

I had the update done on mine, needless to say it is not all that "nannyfied". I went after shortly to test the newly response on a variety of situations. Not once, did it "kill" any power to anything.

Just giving my personal experience.

Like I said I need to play with the 4Runner, but in the Corollas when you hold the accelerator and then press the brake at the same time for more than a couple seconds the vehicle basically goes straight to idle. Then the response from recovering from this "kill mode" is probably a good 5 seconds or more with my foot WOT (Wide Open Throttle.)

I believe you will be surprised at the tardiness of the update if you do for some reason experience anything new. It may that the update has been more permissive to the Toyota 4Runner.

No sure, if this is sarcasm or not. I will however continue with a possible situation. For example, If someone is at a stop light and decides it is necessary to turn around a smack their child. Most drivers tend to press downward on the floor underneath them to give more support and just above the floor are the pedals. One may step on both and cause the issue of a rear impact car collision, thus Toyota has solved our issue and we can continue with the smacking.

I declined as well when I was at Toyota Service, there are times at the boat ramp where I use both the brake and gas pedal at the same time

I got this notice in the mail today, too. I have to assume that with 130K miles on my Runner now, if the problem hasn't happened to me yet, then it won't. And it hasn't.

Is this right?

Just got my notice too and my '03 got 140k miles and no problem so far. I think I'll skip.

I experienced the brake pedal/gas pedal 5 times now. I don't believe a software fix is the real fix for it. When I press on the brake my shoe is even with gas pedal. imo they need to move the brake pedal over about an inch. I have 13" shoes and some of these shoes now a days are quite wide. So the shoe is the problem too. I've driven the T4R without shoes and I don't have a problem. Taking away your acceleration is not the right answer to this problem.

Getting to the 5th time it happened, my wife and I live in Tucson and were taking Salt Creek River Highway to Show Low, AZ for the fall colors. I got behind a poker going up hill once you pass the bridge, and naturally just gunned to go around. What happened next scared the crap out of me and my wife. I was doing 50-60 mph in a passing zone and crossed over to the right lane. I started to put on my brake after I passed the person and applied my brake and I started accelerating. With the curves on the road, I almost took out a guard rail. If I had gone through the guard rail, it's over 2000 ft drop down the to river. Scared the crap of me.

I realize it was my fault. My shoes are too wide. And the brake and gas pedal line up with each other when I step on the brake. I am reluctantly going to have them install the brake pedal/gas pedal software fix. My wife hasn't experienced this problem; but I don't believe she would realize what is happening and react fast enough. Too many variable for an accident.

But they ain't going to modify my gas pedal or take my rubber mats!

The fall colors were spectacular this year in the White Mountains! We hit peak week.

3 links to add:

Toyota did say it's also driver error like mentioned here along with the pedal/floormat issue...I'll just add a few links to show some of what went on for future Toyota/Lexus buyers to see for themselves. I left out any links about the acceleration bs, everyone knows about that or wouldn't be here.

Driver error..Peddles designed too close imo too: :fear:
It's All Your Fault: The DOT Renders Its Verdict on Toyota's Unintended-Acceleration Scare ? Feature ? Car and Driver

Final Verdict on it all: :clap2:

Then Smartstop outcome mentioned here by OP: :heh:
Sure to be on all makes/model vehicles like automatic braking is going to be I'm sure..

Is this recall worth doing for those of you who have had it done?

Any problems with it?

This looks like nothing more than a stop-gap measure intended for those who drive with 2 feet.

Also it also looks like I was correct when I also mentioned that the gas pedal and brake pedal were too close.

I have never returned to my Toyota stealer dealership since buying my 08 new, never ever for any of them so called floor mat recalls, or any of them recalls.
No free oil changes i change my own oil&filters no free inspections no free information.
I get lots of mailings from the stealer dealership, want to give me $24,500 trade in on a new 2016 4Runner and me pay $548 for 48 Months also there are some other costs to be added.
No thanks my dear ex Toyota dealership, not ready to lose my sweet little good running "without any of your help" 4Runner.

Smart.

It's ok if don't have to use any of the warranties on the vehicle.

The recalls were unneccessary imo.

However, I do believe one of the problems are the pedals are too close to each other.

Toyota never addressed that issue but issued this recall instead (Smart Stop Technology).

I agree the pedals are too close together. I noticed that immediately when I first drove a 4th gen (I have size 14 shoes), but felt I could manage with it. After driving it a few thousand miles, I don't really think about it any more.

Still it seems if you hit both pedals at once, you'd get brakes but not acceleration, since
(a) the brake activates further from the floor than the accelerator, and
(b) the brakes will always overpower the engine. I tested that rigorously at various speeds, and I could find no situations where the engine was even close to overpowering the brakes, even with the V8.

There are some people that have reported that after hard braking the engine gets stuck in a low output mode until you restart the car. It sounds like how SST limits engine power if you are on the brakes, and maybe it thinks they are still on the brakes for some reason. I don't know if the recall affects that or not, but you could find the thread and ask the people that reported it if they've had the recall done at the time. I've never personally had that problem.

Ecu reflash

I took my 05 4Runner to get the dash replaced that finally came in after being on order for 5 months. I did ask them to replace the airbag ECU 16V065 but nothing else.
When I pick up my 4Runner, I saw on the paperwork that the pedal chop and BST were done. I was and I'm still extremely pissed off and I learned that the REFLASH isn't reversible. After doing some research, I think the BST may not be as bad as I first thought, but it doesn't excuse the fact that they did things to MY property without permission, which is the same a criminal damage or vandalism.
They ordered a new accelerator pedal for me, they tuned up my AC and are installing an aux interface/satellite radio module since my cassette and CD died a long time ago. They also gave me a loaner 2017 Camery that I would never buy, don't even want to drive it.
Had I suspected they would have did the BST, I would have found a way to secure the ODB II port.
I will never take my vehicle to the dealer again and will warn everyone that will listen, to not trust the dealerships.
