Safty Concerns of the OEM Bridgestone Tires

I have had my truck 1 year and 2 weeks ago Long Island had alot of ice and freezing rain. My truck slid all over the place! I could not believe how awful these tires performed. I am going to use these through the summer and buy a new set before the winter. I only drive on roads and want to know what you guys think.

Ice and freezing rain will do that to any vehicle. It's best to order a pizza and stay off the roads if you can. I'm not saying that you have to stay indoors.

You may need to drive places regardless of condition. But, your best bet is to leave the nasty weather behind and let the amatures have their way with it.

So let me get this straight... You're asking all-season highway tires to NOT slide around in ice and snow?

Wow.... Some people are not that brilliant.

I drive my 4Runner HARD and have the same-as-stock Bridgestone's on it. I've put over 36k miles on these tires and they still have 7/32nds of tread left and still grip decently well. If I were to run them down to 2/32nds, I'm basically looking at another 35k miles (total of 70k out of them)... That's not bad life at all for the price.

Sounds like you should keep those as summer tires and get a seperate set of winter rims with Michelin X-Ice or Bridgestone Blizzaks. If not, then slow down on ice because any other all-season is not a winter ice tire.

Anyway, looking to replace these with something with more bite thinking about the Goodyear Fortera TripleTred, Pirelli Scorpion ATR or the Revo.

You mention Bridgestones, I thought the standard OEM was Dunlop.

As for Ice, unless you use a studded tire, or a set of chains, I can't think of any tire that will work. This is on true Ice only, where you are not getting any traction. If you have a mixture of snow and ice, then a more aggressive tread may help.

I test drove a Limited yesterday and it had Bridgestone Dueller's on it so I'm assuming this is the tire you are talking about. I have a set of these on a Jeep now and they do as good as any tire I have ever had on it. About a month ago I put Goodyear Fortera triple treds, (255/55/R18's) on my X5 and got to drive it one good snow, the Goodyears are a little better than the Dueller but not by much. I do really like the triple treds, they are a little noiser and my gas milage went down about 2 MPG with them compared to the Michelins that were on it before. The Michelins were horrible on anything but dry pavement. The Duellers are about $50 a tire cheaper than the triple treds, probably the better deal.

My '03 came with the Bridgestone Dueler HTs as the OEM tire. I noted Michelins and Dunlops on on other '03s in the lot at the same time. I just looked at the '07s on the lot, and they still have a mix of all three.

As for the Bridgestone oem tires, they are alright for summer use, but don't cut it in the winter, IMHO. I have a set of REVOs mounted on steel wheels for winter use, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another set when they wear out. IMHO, you are asking for the impossible if you want a good winter tire that also gives good summer control, mileage and wear. It is a PITA, but switching between summer and winter tires is the is the best option in my opinion.

Had a 97 Ford Explorer with 98,000 miles, the tires were Bridgestone A/T. Went through some bad winters with these tires and never felt the same out of control sliding as with my Runner with the OEM's.

TechWrench, why not use the Revos all year long? and what kind of gas mileage drop can I expect?

I had bridgestone duelers on my 04 and got revo's in 05 and I didn't notice any difference in MPG. I think they are a tad louder but not really noticable unless you drive 85-90 without the radio on.

I plan to replace the stock dueler HT's and Dunlops on my sr5 and SE respectively with dueler AT's when the time comes. I'm more than willing to accept louder tires and better grip with the REVO's as opposed to a slighty quieter ride.

In my case, I can't see driving the REVOs all year round, when the OEM H/Ts work well during the summer. I don't go off road much except for fall hunting season, and the REVOs are on by then. The REVOs would wear out much faster if I ran them all the time, so I'd rather save them for the winter when I really need them. I just about finished my 3rd winter with them, and expect to get 3 more winters before I have to replace them at the rate they are wearing. As for the mileage drop, it's hard to say. I drop about 2-3 mpg in the winter, but how much is the tires and how much is the colder weather, I'm not sure.

When I finally wear out the H/Ts, maybe then I will go with the REVOs all year. But by then, who knows what new tire technology will be available to choose from?

If its a snow storm outside I'm driving and playing everywhere.

If its freezing rain / ice I stay home . Some tires are supposed to be better than others , but ice is ICE !!! Stay the hell off the road if you possibly can.

Only studded tires will help.
