Sam's 89 4runner 3.4 5VZE swap

So today I've been having an absolute shit day. My GF broke up with me this morning and won't give me my mountain bike back, then when I went to get lunch in the 4runner today I ended up blowing the headgasket on the 3.slow. Normally I'd just drive it home with a bad head gasket, but it refused to stay running. What a surprise just my luck (guess I shouldnt be surprised with the 3.0). Ended up walking home a mile called a tow truck and got it dropped off at my house about an hour ago. So there I am sitting at home contemplating what to do with the giant paperweight in my driveway. Luckily I have my pickup I can drive in the meantime. Well instead of rebuilding the POS 3.0 and risk having it fail again later down the road, plus it lacks a ton of power, I decided I will be doing the 3.4 5vze swap. So this will be my new build thread for the 4runner. I will try to document every step here. I have already sourced a donor motor. Now its just a matter of pulling the trigger and ordering all the parts to make the sucker work.

Here is the 4runner getting the swap. Wish me luck guys.

Yea working on my 4runner is therapy for me haha. The plan is to eventually have a 3.4 swapped long travel 4runner with a cage in it. So a couple small updates. I pulled the 4runner into the shop today. Took my pickup out so I can drive it DD at the moment. Started ordering a ton of parts today. When I say a ton of parts, I mean a TON. I talked to Mike at ORS and decided to use his harness and a few of the bits he sells on his site to make the swap more streamline. So heres my current list of parts I purchased within the last 24 hours.

-New 3 row all aluminum radiator
-3.4-3.0 crossover pipe from ORS
-3.4-3.0 Wiring harness from ORS
-upper and lower radiator hoses from ORS
-Aisin Clutch kit
-Aisin Timing belt full kit with water pump etc.
-New plugs and wires for 3.4
-New transmission mount (factory)
-Oil pickup tube

Also picked up a new bigger shop crane and a new engine stand to do the job right.

As far as engine and donor vehicle I already have one located and will hopefully be pulling some stuff from it this weekend.

:behindsofa: This seems to be the dream swap. I'll be watching. Subscribed. Whats the HP/torque breakdown on the 3. slow, 22re and your choice?

Here are the HP torque breakdown for the engines in question. Based off the info on the net the 3.4 makes much more usable torque at a lower rpm than the 3.0. The 4runner should feel substantially peppier I think once the swap is done. Plus I am sure the 3.0 in mines was tired and old now.

22r
-96 HP @ 4800 rpm
-129 Torque @2800 rpm

22re
-105 HP @4800 rpm
-137 Torque @ 2800 rpm

3.0 3vze
-150 HP @ 4800 rpm
-177 Torque @ 4000 rpm

3.4 5vze
-190 HP @ 4800 rpm
-220 Torque @ 3600 rpm

Go 1uz swap.
It's like the difference between having a girlfriend and a smoking hot fwb. One of them is really going to perform and make you smile. All pun intended.

Trust me I would have loved to do a 1UZ swap but it's not in the budget or time frame I need it done in. I'm estimating a total cost of 1800 right now for the full swap. I'm also allotting 2 months to complete the swap while still going to school currently.

Famous last words. :D

If you can do it, more power to you. I failed, blew my budget right out of the water.

Well Im not gonna guarantee that ill come in at budget, but I sure hope I don't double it. Funds are gonna get pretty tight haha, might need to sell the motorcycles to fund this. :(

Awesome truck, the fun factor between a 3vz and 5vz wouldn't be enough to justify the cost of the swap IMO. I'd fix the headgasket and save for the 1uz :)

I already have an entire full donor vehicle to pull parts from instead of scrounging parts for a 1UZ swap. Budget wise and time frame wise this is probably the swap that makes the most sense for me right now not to mention how well documented this swap is. I feel like the 1UZ swap is out of my range in both skill level and budget. I already pulled the head from the pass side of the 3vze and the engine is toast. No rebuilding it now unless I wanna replace the head aswell.

So how did it go? did you get it under budget or what? also since the 1st gen is a lot lighter, what gas mileage do you think you would be getting?
