Sand tracks - worthwhile?

I was in 4wheelparts today and was checking out the Smittybilt Element Ramps, among other things. What is the consensus around here - are sand tracks such as the Smittybilts or Maxtrax worthwhile? Anyone use them, like them, or are they dead weight?


On a side note, I picked up a Smittybilt black hitch shackle. Fit was super tight, but looks great back there. Good thing too, because I don't know how I'll get it back out!

I'm going to go with "no". Spend your money on an X-Jack, and make your own sandladders with some expanded steel mesh and angle iron.

They work if used properly, but I do agree that an x-jack would be the first money spent with sand ladders later. Of course this is all without information on where the OP is using his vehicle and type of terrain etc. etc. If the guy is in the rocks all the time then deffinetly the x-jack, if he is only in the dunes then toss up. Just like with anything it is proper use of the equipment.

I own a set of Maxtrax and have only used them once. They worked great to help a stuck vehicle in the snow last winter.

IMO There are many other more useful recovery items to buy first.
