This summer Im gonna do an sas on my 86. I have been looking for the cheapest kit to do this. I have known about sky manufacturing for a while and was curious if anyone has used there kit? I have a complete 81 pickup to swap from so i dont need all the steering components ( i think)? maybe someone knows of a better kit. I kinda wanna do skys kit if its good (their local)

If I had it to do again I wouldnt have used a kit. I would have looked at my 81 and just made my own parts as I went along. A good kit will come with EVERYTHING you need though. Including axle rebuild parts High Steer conversion and brakes and shocks and stuff.

You do need the crossover steering components in a SAS kit, you won't be using any of the steering parts from the solid axle truck on your swap.

You can buy any of the SAS parts you need separately from any of the vendors, you don'y have to buy the packaged kits.

I havent done a sas yet but ive been looking at them for my 87 pickup i just picked up and a kit looks like the way to go, if you price everything out brand new it comes out to much more then you can buy a kit for and it seems like it would be a lot less of a headache. Do it once and do it right is my philosophy.

Go with a kit. They include everything you need and its all designed to work together. IMHO, they pay for themselves 10-fold when you need a replacement part. You call one place and get what you need without a single hassle.

FWIW, I would never buy a rig that had a pieced together kit. If you do, you will have no clue what parts are what. I run into this constantly when customers bring it trucks that they bought that were already built. Its a nightmare to go through them and fix all the things the PO did to them.

I guess the point is: Don't halfass the SAS kit. Buy one that is designed to work together. You will thank yourself in the long run.

I have installed at least 35-40 of the kits we sell on customer's rig to date. I would never try to piece one together. You'll spend more trying to piece it all. The Trail-Gear kits we sell are extremely complete and they will work VERY well.

I have full CNC cutting capabilities and I still go with kits for all the reasons Scotty pointed out.

well it sounds like my sas will have to wait a while. i cant afford 1000+ for a complete kit. I was really hoping i could use the stock steering components
