Satoshi Grill Mod - 5th Gen

I want to retain the chrome sombrero logo, but black-out the side wings (I like chrome - just the right amount though). I'd probably want to physically strip the chrome as much as possible to avoid the black paint chipping off and revealing the chrome behind it - and I'm 100% positive I'll screw something up in the process (never fails ).

Do any of the 4Runners have the BLACK front wings from the factory (like the way the SR5 & Limited has the chrome REAR garnish, but the Trail's REAR garnish is BLACK)? I'd much prefer if the piece is color-matched in the plastic itself to avoid ugly rock chips, etc.

That logo stays on when the wings are removed.

I just scuffed my chrome up with some sandpaper (it's pretty tough stuff!) and sprayed it with 2 coats of Rustoleum Bedliner this past weekend. In my experience with that stuff, it's really durable. We shall see- Pics

Thanks so much for the clarification - So the Trail's front garnish is just like the Trail's rear garnish (black plastic with chrome emblem). Sounds like Sundog has a black one off a Trail to offer me - a perfect intermediary mod for the meanwhile.

Ant - I thought you had a Trail Edition (swapped from an SR5, correct?). Are those pics from your old SR5? That bed liner does look good IMO - I used "Herculiner" on my DIY JBL 18" PA System sub enclosures a few months ago - it is tough as hell and looks great!

Quick Q - I'm inside @ work and it is raining outside - so don't want to run outside right now...

Is the 6"x36" Custom Car Grille mesh large enough for the bottom grille mod? About to place my order in a minute...

Also, is 15' of the rubber edge-trim stuff enough to cover both grilles' perimeter (upper and lower)?

I obviously decided on the metal grille over the plastic material due to the added complexity with the plastic fitment and required frame fabrication...

PS - I purchased Sundog's stock grille - He is a very nice guy!

Thank you sir! Seeing your handy work in this thread is super inspiring - very nice work! If I had to fabricate a frame, I could not expect it to look anywhere near acceptable with me at the helm - so I'm leaning towards the flat metal grille material with the edge-trim to lessen the work on my end...

I'm pondering the Hexagon Mesh XXL over the Diamond Mesh XXL. Do any of you have an aesthetic preference either way? I don't believe I've seen pics of the Hex Mesh posted - but I'll scour the thread again.

It would seem the hex is a little tighter and will mask the stuff behind the grille better than the diamond (but also means less air flow - Hex = 60% Open / Diamond = 70% open) ). Both are 16ga.

I'd obviously end up cutting the top/upper piece from the Hexagon sheet, where the Diamond version is available pre-cut. Bottom grille wouldn't be any different (have to cut both Hex and Diamond to fit). Thoughts either way? I know some have mentioned concerns with rust on the grille edges you have to cut yourself.

I'm postponing my order until Thursday.

Well, I had a few days off this past week and had the help of my uncle and his barn at the farm again.... so we attacked the [MENTION=85819]coversion[/MENTION] Satoshi Grill mod. Thanks for the help btw coversion. So far my grill hasn't fallen off and my car still runs, so that's always a plus.

Got my plastic mesh material today. Comparison photo from the OEM and the aftermarket.







I think my plan of attack will be sawing the standard grille out as close as possible to the perimeter. Using the sawed out portion as a template, I'll cut the aftermarket material to be just a bit larger and sand/cut as needed to get a snug fit. I'll have to figure out a way to attach it (epoxy?) and then attach something to clean it up around the perimeter.

Anyone interested in buying this from me? I sold my T4R yesterday before I ever got the time/nerve to start the conversion. I also have the large T O Y O T A grille badge. Everything you need for a Satoshi included. I'd take $75 shipped to the continental US.

but here you go anyway I just happened to have it here on my PC from when I got mine. You can always take this to the dealer like I did and have them price match and get it sooner.

I just finished my grill mod. Thought I'd share some ideas for those who are going to do this.

I got the grill mesh from here

And the Toyota Emblem from Toyota Parts Online and the part number is 75311-90k00

I used car door edge trip to trim around the grill to hid any mistakes and clean up the look. I used lock-tite plastic bonding to attach the trim. It was simple and very cheap.

I also bought a spare grill because I knew it would take me a few days of working 30-60min at a time and I didn't want to rip mine apart and fail. That being said, I have the grill I took out for sale if you want to do the same. Send me a message if you want it.

It doesn't matter what color your car is, the trim piece that goes across the top unscrews in less than a minute.
