I'm confused
I love the mod, I have a different grill on my "01 sport, what year's your rig?

Great question, here's the answer:

As far as the grill difference goes, there were different grills based on year. I think the one used for the Satoshi mode is the 96-98 grill. The others aren't as easy to use.

My understanding is that they are all interchangeable.
Was there a particular guide you followed or did you just go for it? Before I buy parts I want to make sure I can do it. I saw one guide that showed cutting the grill out and then sanding and using some kind of putty to seal up stuff. But are you happy with the gutter mesh from home depot or do you think it's better to order a grill mesh? Im also wondering how the mesh is attached to your grill? Did you mount it with hardware or glue.. I found one guide but was wondering which guide you used because yours came out nice. I apologize for all of the questions.

Uh, did you follow the link I posted? That is a walkthrough that is very detailed.
You won't find a definite right and wrong on any custom mod like this. Find a mesh that you think will look good and try it. It appears most people use standard expanded metal mesh or very similar and like it. I don't think the mesh is the most important part as it is really just supposed to blend into the background.
BTW, SQ.MD, that looks awesome. Very clean. Somehow I missed your pics the first time I saw this thread.

That Gray paint job is really awesome. I love my Black but I would trade it for yours. I haven't seen that but a few times, it must be rare or aftermarket.

ok heres a question??
i dont really like the newer chrome grill like i have on my 2000 with the chrome piece down the middle, i was wondering can you still do the satoshi mod with this grill or is it only for the older grills. and if so will a earlier grill like like the ones without the chrome piece down the middle fit on a 2000 runner?

yes you can.there are several threads for 4th and 5th gens on this forum and yotatech (our friends) and some other forums. go on google and search

Most uses the older 96-98 grill for the Satoshi mod mainly because the only modification you'll have to do is remove the middle piece, without harming the surrounding chrome, clean up the trimmed ends, possibly fiberglass, although some have managed to skip that process, and yes they are all interchangeable between years from 96-02.

So it's much harder on 99-02 grills? I'd really like to do this to my 99, but I would rather not have to buy a whole new grill.

This seems like a high quality thread for the Satoshi mod, so if it's not considered a thread-hijack, I will share my experience as well.
I bought a 96 grill on eBay for around $50, it was missing the Toyota emblem which obviously didn't matter. Thought it was a good deal as the majority of these grills were closer to $100. I went to town on it with a wanna-be Dremel tool and didn't bother with the fiberglass/bondo, etc. I'm cheap.
Then instead of the gutter mesh (I didn't like the quality of what I saw at Lowes) I went ahead and bought some black aluminum grill mesh on ebay, got a 12x48 sheet of it for $22 shipped. (Was a "or make offer" auction, asking price $20, seller accepted $16. - love that "make offer" feature!)
I made a cardboard template for the grill then cut it out of the mesh sheet with a nice pair of tin ships. To take it a step further I then used door edge guard in black to frame out the grill, I think it gives it a slightly more polished look.
To attach grill insert to grill I simply used a little bailing wire, attached at three points, we'll see how it holds up. I also attached the TRD emblem with the bailing wire (only visible up close.) The 3M adhesive on the back didn't want to attach well to the mesh, even with clamps overnight on it.
I'll try to upload some pics here in next post..
