Damn, that's pricey. I've had one of these on since I put my bumper on. Plus I still have a bunch of beer money left over.

As for relocating the solenoid, I had fun doing mine. It really wasn't hard. Plus you can install switches in the cab to operate the winch as well, if you want.

Really, cable isn't that expensive, and you can install the lugs on it yourself with a cheap hammer "press".

psraff good to hear from you. Haven't seen you around much lately... Thanks for chiming-in and for sharing your switch install.

The unit I ordered comes with a wireless remote, but unfortunately that seems to be the primary knock on it, from the reviews I read. As I recall it's because the battery drains easily, so users have to remove the remote's battery, or something like that... It can also operate wired, so maybe I'll use it that way. I find your solution very appealing though.

You welcome. You're right, I did drift away from this for a bit. I haven't worked on my trailer either... What I have been doing is remodeling my house. Removing baseboard heat, putting in in-floor heat, new floors, paint, trim, interior doors, a few extras here and there. I actually have the flooring guy here today doing the last bedroom and hallway (only thing I won't do myself. It's more cost effective for me to have someone install the floor). All this to raise the appraisal value and hope to move out of Alaska this year.

I hear ya and know about house remodels, that's for damn sure. From 2012 to 2014 I busted my ass getting our old canyon home ready for the mkt and sold. Bought a new place before that sale, a fixer-up of course, and worked on both for a good part of a year (homes about 20 minutes apart), until I worked myself into the hospital. That slowed me down, lol. The last few years, working on the "new" place, which is like 95% done... I so look-forward to working on the 4Runner for a change of pace.

Best to you on getting a desirable sale; while not jeopardizing your health!

Thanks! All of this to try to move down to your neck of the woods (Arizona most likely). Seems like every day Alaska is getting under my skin more and more. For instance today. I went to Fastenal for the nuts for the O2 sensors (I found a thread that had a link to their page showing the exact nut I needed). Their answer was. "Oh no, that's not a popular nut. And metric. No we don't carry that. Closest place that has it is in California." :toilet: I can't even get a fricking Stainless Steel metric nut with the Flange on it up here without trying a dozen places!!!

Yes I know we've strayed off topic a bit.... LOL :police::focus::police:

Alaska to Arizona, wow! That's a damn radical change. Arizona has my interest too actually, areas with some elevation though (less heat).

To help get this back on the track, I got this a couple weeks back...

With respect to the control box, the side mount option was not feasible with the Savage bumper and at the top, I was not keen on blocking yet more precious airflow, I stuck it inside the bumper as rkntoy showed earlier, but in a different orientation to allow for lighting (Baja Designs Squadrons. wide cornering).

I need to install my winch and the only reason I haven't was where to put the control box...

I was also considering inside the bumper and possibly cutting a port for the cable connection.

Another option is to make longer control box leads and install the control box wherever.

Mike, thank you. Always good to hear from you.

I thought of the engine bay alright. With the space inside the bumper plentiful and accessible, that became the goal. Took some measurements and sketching to get it to fit with the lighting, but well worth the time to sort it out... The control box mounted further away, means longer cables, which should be a heavier gauge too.

Even though the winch is IP68 rated, I like the idea that the control box is sheltered within the bumper.

I almost went with the winch "cover" I used 30 years ago! Really, I still have it. A 24 inch duffel bag and two bungee cords, lol. It did the job and it is likely more durable than these purpose-built covers I see for sale these days. That said, I bought one, arriving tomorrow. Also coming is a flip license plate holder...
 
I'm not sure if I've posted this anywhere other than my build thread, but I'm partial for the remote setup. I've got the winch solenoid mounted on the core support up front, and then I've run the wiring up into the cab. You can either use the switches on the dash, or plug in the wired remote and use that:
