Savage rear tube bumper and sliders?

I am looking into buying some used Savage parts. A rear tube bumper and sliders. What is the quality like for these parts? Are they solid pieces and worth buying used?

I have the sliders in my basement. Just from picking them up and looking at the welds, I think they should be awesome when I get them on. I almost bought a bumper, but I couldn't find the justification for it.

I wish I could find a used Savage bumper :hunter:

I just received my sliders last week.. took the full 8 weeks to receive them but they look awesome. I will be putting them on in the next few weeks.

Is there any way to adjust the angle of the sliders? I have a friend who can weld them. I'd prefer them to be tucked up a little higher than they look in the guy's pictures. He has them bolted on now.

You would have to cut and modify to change angle... I plan on trimming the pinch weld at the supports to get it to tuck higher.

Thanks Chim. I thought that might be the answer.
At the current angle, they look a lot like slightly-high running boards. Even with them down a little lower than I want, I think I will get them and deal with them, if I can. I'm trying to arrange a time to meet with the seller and pick the stuff up tomorrow. The sliders are a fair deal. The rear bumper is an awesome deal. I can't wait!

I have Had the rear bumper going on 4 years now.

I think its great. I've taken it all over the place. Lots of pics in my build thread. I even have a FULL 33" (255x85x16) spare underneath and you can barely see it.

That's outstanding to hear, that you can fit a 255 tire in the spare location. That's the size I want to go with. I can't wait to get this bumper!

Brian, did you only bolt it up or did you weld it too? Is it rated for towing? Have you used it for towing, from the hitch or recovery from the shackle mounts, and how did it hold up?

Let's put it this way, the bumper has thicker steel than the frame. Yes it is good for towing.

I didn't weld it. It comes with ~ 8 bolts that are far more than strong enough.

I actually redrilled the bolt holes in the bumper moving them out about 1 or 1.5" so that I could fit the bigger spare without the tire rubber having to be compressed. This moved the bumper rearwards enough to perfectly fit the spare. Now it fits perfect even at 30 psi.

I've got savage sliders. If you want them at a different angle just call them. Roy is a great guy to work with. I had mine changed to the angle is almost 0, that way they serve as better steps. He makes fantastic products.

I think Brian means he drilled new holes (farther back) in the frame for the bumper to mount to so the bumper has better clearance for his spare.

Thanks. Does that mean the rear bumper sticks out just a little bit further than it was normally designed? Was that easy to do?

I don't have 255 tires now. Should I just mount it up as it was designed and then worry about drilling new holes when I need to make more space later? That way, when I get 255 tires, I will have the tire available to test-fit and get it right.

I have 285x75x16 (32.8") tires but 285s are a wide tire so for a spare I have a skinnier 255x85x16 (33.1") Cooper tire. I needed to move the bumper to fit a 33" (285 or 255) without "stuffing it"

The only difference between the 255 and the 285 is the 285 hangs down a lot lower. I don't have the pic handy but it is in my thread.

I didn't move the bumper back until about 2.5 years after I bought it.
