I don't think its "don't buy a jeep"... But more or less, don't buy a jeep with all this electronic everything, and safety recalls, and not take it in for repair.

Also, nothing has been proven yet, all stipulated.
 
This was posted yesterday and I will say to this what I said to that: pay attention and put on your parking brake.

Any transmission can fall out of park so that's why you need your brake too. It's not limited to just jeep. I wouldn't say "don't buy a Toyota because it'll automatically floor your throttle and go nuts"

Common sense.

The first article states the actual recall notice has not gone out yet, only the preliminary notices advising owners of the issue and that a recall is in the works. Jeep is waiting on parts to begin performing the recall repair.

Not disagreeing with your sentiment but the guy who got crushed by his own car isn't to blame for not getting the work performed.
 
Maybe when you park your car and walk downhill from it, it would behoove you to set the parking brake, put the transmission in park, and maybe even kill the engine.

What was the state of the Jeep when it was found?

He should have jumped higher.

Do you think this is even a story we would hear about if he wasn't famous? Like the kid trying to sue porshe because her dad died in one.. This is all normal, everyday stuff...people die of way worse things.

A little bit of awareness can go a long ways.
 
Wait, so you're telling me, that even though the vehicle is in a gear or neutral, you can take the key out of it?

When the hell did that start happening? I can't take the key out of the 4Runner, or my wife's Pontiac (and we all know what that stands for), without the transmission in Park. Or my VW for that matter.

Again, not disagreeing with you, but I was speaking more to the comment of blaming the owner for not taking it in for repairs when there was no repair available yet.
 
I rented a Challenger and it used the same shifter as the JGC - Awful piece of hardware. You have none of the normal muscle memory you are used to when shifting gears. No tactile or even auditory feedback.

I also rented a Ram 1500 and a Chrysler 200 with the stupid rotary knob shifter. good luck trying to do a 3-point turn the normal way with that POS. Too much time taking your eyes off the road to stare at that knob and the indicator lights to know what gear you are in.

The 200 also stalled on me at a stop sign, but, why expect anything less?

FIAT apparently has a thing for gear selectors that require your complete and undivided attention for things that should be simple.
 
Jeeps are crap. Period. All of them.

Very sad what happened, but it boils down to operator error. Jeep made a stupid design (just so it looks "upscale") but it's audience or buyers don't know how to use it. This explains why Jeep has since re-designed the shifter to a more traditional one. And yes, always use your parking brake.
 
This has to do more with the type of shifter than it being a Jeep. A few years ago I rented a Chrysler 300C with that stupid shifter. You basically pull it back about 1/2" and it electronically selects reverse or drive. Or in my case, neutral, and any other position it wanted. It was a real pain, especially if you were trying to park quickly. Several times I left in reverse and shut of the ignition, then had to correctly put it in park. Recently, I rented another 2016 model that had the same shifter. It was much better and went where I wanted it, so they must have made some improvements. Fortunately, you won't find this shifter in the Wrangler.

I just tried it in my 1999 4Runner and my 2015 Corolla and I can't take the key out in park. Can't even turn it all the way off.

The grand Cherokee has a smart key, just like the Prius, limited 4Runner, sienna XLE and limited, PriusV, highlander XLE and limited, land cruiser, Camry XLE or XSE, and the Avalon. The answer is yes, you can get out of the car with the key in your pocket and the car doesn't shut off. It chimes and beeps to alert you.

As far as the shifter these things have not been failing at a record pace, I've seen it happen once and I work at a jeep dealership in sales. Having said that, I'd never buy one. But the issues with the what gear is selected is a simple case of not paying attention.
