Ever since they were bought by Chrysler they've been for the most part sub party in quality or reliability. The Wranglers are about the only one that's managed to hold some semblance of durability despite being saddled with the burden of being a Chrysler product. Even then they've suffered, both Jeep and Chrysler have a history of being unable to manage themselves and their quality control; in so much that Chrysler just about went bankrupt twice and is now owned by Fiat after they failed with government support. That just about makes them an embarrassment of a Domestic and speaks volumes of the inherent issues with their products. Toyota, GM, and others make poor designs or quality issues now and again; Chrysler has made it a business model, an unsuccessful one at that
I don't disagree with any of that. But no manufacturer could survive or 75 plus years making 100% crap products as the poster stated. 100's of extinct car companies can attest to that.

The problem is that they made an aesthetic design choice just to be cool/unique that induces confusion.
There was no functional reason to mess with the shifter - they tried to go high-tech ala BMW/MB etc... and failed basic human interface design in the process.

But man do you have to love the engines they give you. Either a diesel / badass v8. Man I have thought a couple times about trading in for a Cherokee SRT8.

Couldn't agree more with this. I realize some higher end cars use rotary shifter so I guess they're trying to give people a sense of luxury. But I can't fathom why they decided to go that route in a pickup truck. Talk about a PIA if you get stuck or you're trying to maneuver a trailer into a tight spot.

That and the regular v8 had problems as well cylinder 6 due to poor manufacturing. We would get at least one a week in at service and these vehicles didn't even have 20k miles on them. Reliable Wranglers. . .no longer. Two friends personally who don't flog their vehicles both had to have their engines replaced with almost 15k miles on the vehicles they bought new due to oil consumption?
The only reason they are still around is the idea of a no roof no door vehicle. Talk to a logical individual and the effort to take off the roofs and doors, and the time commitment, room for these as they are off and wont get damage, as well as hoping the weather is consistent for more than a day shows how impractical they are. They hold resale due to the fanboys, not because of them being reliable.

My experience: 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee owned for one year that was in the shop 11 times = switch to new 2015 4Runner. I have owned this for a year and the only reason it has been back is for oil changes and tire rotations.

My wife's Prius has a similar (I guess) transmission shifter and the smart key. It's anything but intuitive; and I have to think about what I'm doing whenever I drive it. Putting it in 'Park' isn't even possible.
I often lament that my 5th gen doesn't have a manual tranny, but at least the auto tranny shifter is the same as every other car designed in the last 40 years.

I have the rotary shifter in my Ram. After about 2 weeks of cranking up the a/c instead of going in drive.. You get used to it.
Off road, backing trailers, daily driving... Don't even notice it..
Guess I'm saying that it's not that bad.

Well, I'm sorry for having awaken you from your slumber. You don't have to look very far for people to come the same conclusion. Chrysler has been around since when? Yet look at them now. If I were a betting man, I'd would bet they won't be around longer unless someone like GM merges/buys/whatever with them. They have been producing junk for decades, but people buy them. Lots of incentives out there. (not many for Toyota's, Honda's, etc) See many of those cars on the road today? I didn't think so. Jeep has been around since WWII? So what? Long term they are junk, I challenge you to ask any mechanic if they are reliable. Most will laugh at you. Sure they are great at what they do (off road and lately it's just about a stupid image), but the problem is they don't last. Its seems as though they self-destruct. Always been that way. Why do people continue to buy them? I suppose people don't care as most folks do away with them with when the warranty expires. Ignorant? I've had 4 goddamn Grand Cherokees and THEY WERE ALL GARBAGE. (long story on why we had 4 of them). My current 4Runner is an absolute gem of a vehicle, yes it has its issues, but those are non-comparable to a Jeep. Your ignorant statement "I didn't say your ignorance, you did" is not in my face. I have had 4 Jeeps as well and had 0 issues with the Comanche, 1 issue with my YJ, a sport Wrangle that did have a bad paint issue, and a Rubicon that I beat the crap out of for 9 years with no issues. So again I say, to state that every single Jeep is crap is an ignorant statement. Do they have more than their fair share of issues, absolutely. They are overall not a reliable company, but maybe if you had ventured further than the GC, you may have seen that (edit) that there are some good ones out there(/edit).
But you know what, you owned 4 Jeeps so you are an expert on every Jeep made. I bow to the master.

The wrangler is the jeep product I'd own. Even though we have two under 60k miles getting new motors right now. Jeep is successful because they cater to a high end domestic crowd. They are comparably inexpensive to fix VS other high end off-road capable vehicles. Plus, as a value proposition they are too good to pass up. For 40k you get 6200 lbs towing, heated/cooled seats, heated steering wheel, heated second row, wifi, good fuel economy, great off road capability (can't argue that one) compared to ride and comfort, and lots of safety tech and more creature comforts. It's a niche brand that exploits a whole in the market. As I love to say at work, "highest in INITIAL quality is a terrible prize to win"

Just question your argument, although this is all subjective? But good fuel economy? I mean if buyers were really concerned about that I think they would get something else. I agree I think initially they were great vehicle and reliable, now they are just a stepping stone for guys to get into their BroDozer lifted trucks on 20s that never leave the pavement. Kind of sad they conquered the Rubicon Trail, but can't handle the city streets.

HA! I nearly spit my coffee everywhere hahahaha. I'll admit I haven't driven one but I just don't see a good reason to put that style shifter in a truck. If you want more cubby holes put a column shift in.
EDIT: I guess it just like anyother change tho, we resist at first but once it becomes the ordinary we accept and learn to like it. I just prefer when there is an actually cable going from the trans to the shifter as opposed to all electronic. Extra sense of security and reliability.
