Saw this new frame at the stealership today

I'm reasonably sure it's for a 4th gen, but it's definitely NOT a Taco or Tundra. Notice the pan hard bar mount. The shock mounts are inboard like ours, but it looks different. The tubular rear x-member is much bigger in diameter than ours. I have no idea what a 4th gen chassis looks like, so maybe someone can chime in?

4th gen+ (and FJ) have outboard mounted rear shocks.

Need to get a better pick of the engine/front diff area to get a better idea.

yeah mostly likely from the 'big frame recall': "About 1.5 million vehicles are covered under terms of the proposed settlement, which includes 2005-10 Tacoma midsize pickups, 2007-08 Tundra full-size pickups and 2005-08 Sequoia large SUVs. Vehicles are covered up to 12 years from the day of sale.

The frames, which lack adequate rustproofing, were supplied by Dana Holding Corp. of Maumee, Ohio. Photos of rust-damaged frames show severe corrosion of the frame rails and the high-stress area where the rear suspension leaf springs mount to the frame."

Yeah, I posted this pic a few days ago. Dealership where I was getting 10k-mile service had maybe 20 frames. Not sure what vehicles they're for.

They're 1st-gen Sequoia frames. When I was getting my Tundra's frame replaced a few years ago the service writer mentioned they'll be replacing Seq. frames next and mine was going to be one of the last Tundras they'll be covering.

I believe the frame rust issues didn't arise until years after the Tundras and Sequoias were already in production.

Sometimes (although labor intensive) replacing frames might be a cheaper expense for Toyota vs retooling, another frame vendor, etc.
But yeah, Toyota is a huge business. You figure they would get their act together by now.

The frame recall was for US built vehicles only. 4Runners are (or were) built in Japan. There is never going to be a frame recall for 3rd gen 4Runners, they are too old. Some perspective also: in the 1970's a Chevy truck was a rusted out mess after 5 years in the rust belt. The engine was worn out between 75 and 125k. We have become so accustomed to driving 10-20 year old vehicles to 200-300k miles that we are upset when the frame rots out after 19 years of daily driving. Anyone remember what the frame on a Scout, Bronco or CJ looked like after 5 or so years in the rust belt? There are a lot of those vehicles left in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, California, etc. not too many here in Maine

Yeah I think it's kinda funny when people on here demand a recall for their 20 year old vehicle that just now is rusting away. Even the Tacomas lasted quite a while with the "faulty" frames.

I think Toyota learned when they did the 96-99 Tacoma buy back for rusted frames, I remember guys getting like 6-9 k for a totally hunk of junk. Talking about part heaven oh my goodness.

Gotta agree with you. I have a 2001 that I have to abandon due to frame rot at 265k miles in the heavy rust belt. 30 years ago, the mechanicals wouldn’t go that long; now, we expect 300k plus. Frames almost need to be made of stainless steel in light of how long the other stuff holds up.

I've had about 15 vehicles some 15 years + old and I've NEVER seen rust (on the frame) like I've seen on my last 4Runner - a 2000 LTD. Just sayin.....

Thanks for the replies, Sequoia makes sense. I had forgotten that they also suffer from crusty frames.
