There were some codes posted at the bottom of the first page but these did not work for me:

So, I played with them a bit and got them working...I just needed to change the TXD and RXF codes to make them work.

Altitude Gauge (Feet)appears to be in Meters but not very accurate.

I had tried all those codes, and they didn't work for me, so I just never messed with them again. How'd you know what to change? Just curious.


For the A/F, the lambda should read 1.0 for stoich. And then 1.2 would be 20% lean and 0.8 would be 20% rich. (the way I understand lambda AFR)

For true AFR, you should probably be seeing a number between 8 and 20. But I have no idea how it's going to display it. I'll try these new codes today. Problem is I'm not driving my 4runner daily, and it needs some work before I can take it out on the road (leaking axle boots). Thanks for posting the working versions of those measurements though! This is great.

I just looked at the codes for different vehicles and looked for patterns. I still have some more things to look at later. I've been Googling code info quite a bit lately.
 
At some point, I saw a decoder for that stuff, but I don't remember where it was.

It would be cool if we could get some new gauges in there for the 4runners. There's got to be a list somewhere of all the available sensors on the 4runner OBDII line.

I was seeing four digit numbers ranging from 1309 up to 1589 while driving.
The 1589 was at the top of a long grade driving home. My runner had down shifted to maintain 60 mph and the Revs were up to 3500 or so.
The lower reading was while coasting or cruising at a steady 50 mph.
I'm not quite sure what to make of these numbers....
If it's a ratio would the 1309 be 13/09 air to fuel????

I'll try out the Lambda next and see what it shows.

Hm. Well, at first I thought maybe it could be a 4 digit number, but with a decimal in the middle. So 13.09 and 15.89. Those numbers would make perfect sense IF there were reversed as to when you observed them. 13.09 is rich (all my statements are in reference to stoich for gasoline) and 15.89 is a lean. You should go lean when coasting or steady cruising, and you should get a little rich when you are working the engine harder. A normal AF/R would be shown 14.7/1 for stoich. Meaning 14.7 parts air to 1 part fuel. A 4 digit number could be construed several ways, but it should always be "to 1".


But you observed the opposite of that. So I dunno. Curious what the lambda setting will yield.

Also, you could have some of the code wrong still....even though it's displaying data. It might be incorrect.

Yes, definitely bass-ackwards for the A/F

I just put in the AFL code and got nothing .....

I did a search and found out the original codes listed work for 2005 and newer Tacomas.

There are two sets of TXD and RXF used and the RXD is the same for all. It appears the MTH is unique to each gauge.

So, there may be another TXD/RXF set around for the 96-02 Runners.

I'll keep searching.......

I've been using the AFR code on my Scangauge since I installed it... The 4Runner's ECM sees the ideal AFR as 14.65:1... that's 14.65 units of air to 1 unit of fuel. Most people say 14.7 is ideal, but I've noticed the 4Runner ECM tends to target 14.65.

If you want to get a good idea of how your 4Runners ECM is controlling AFR's, set one of the guages to LOOP, so that it shows you if the computer is in open loop or closed loop mode.

When the computer is in open loop, it will usually be if you are getting into the throttle pretty heavily. You will see the AFR's drop into the lower end of the range, then rise back up to around 14.65 as the ECM zeroes in on the cell it needs to be in for a particular driving condition. In this mode, the ECU is using a table (think an Excel table) to determine how much fuel to inject into the cylinder. The table is engine load on one axis, and RPM on the other. If you are in/out of the throttle, it will hunt around and tend to stay below 14.65.

When the computer is in closed loop, it will stay very close to 14.65, hunting up and down between 13.50:1 and 15.7:1. In closed loop, the ECM is using feedback from the O2 sensors to adjust the injector pulses to acheive a 14.65:1 AFR. Usually it stays very close to 14.65.

You will also tend to get the best fuel economy in closed loop.

RE the numbers you are seeing...

1150 = 11.50:1, this is on the RICH end of the scale, and I think about as low as the scangauge will show... You will see the low numbers right after you punch it and drop down a gear, then it will come back up.

1775 = 17.75:1, this is on the LEAN end of the scale, and about as high as the scangauge will show. You will see this when coasting, and especially when engine braking.

Mine seems backwards. I'm seeing 1500's when heavy on the throttle and 1300's when coasting.

When I got my scangauge, I went online and printed a document that lists all of the X-gauge codes. The code above is listed on that document as A/F Ratio (bank 1, sensor 1). I tried to link it to you, but got an error 404 page not available, so I went to scangauge's website and they are now listing a different code under the X-gauge code list (XGauges for ISO & VPW Vehicles : Linear Logic : Home of the ScanGauge).

I'm not sure if this is due to a software upgrade between the time I purchased mine and now, or what? All I know is that the code above works perfectly on mine.
 
Im gonna go try these out, thanks dudes. I have a solution to the altitude and barometric pressure codes too.. field monitor unit :D its in metric though.. :(
 
Cool the "2' replaces the "B" in the TXD and RXF parts. And a 9 for the "E" in the MTF.

Maybe this is the "Other" TXD/RXF code we need so the rest of the listed codes work properly.

Mine shows KWPS if I go to more> more> more> mode
 
Mine is in ISO, and I let it Auto-Select the mode when I set it up.

I've got working codes for:

Horsepower
Short Term Fuel Trim
Long Term Fuel Trim
Trans Temp
AFR

AFAIK, those are the only X-guage commands that will work properly on a 3rd Gen w/a SG2.
 
So for sure we have: TFT and AFR working.

I have ALT and AFL giving me numbers but AFL output is reversed and I may be able to fix it based on your AFR code. I'll work on ALT as well since I'm getting numbers out of it .
 
I knew this thread would make me happy when I came back to it today. :) Thanks for the information BFAD. I will most likely change out one of my MPG displays for the AFR now that we have the correct coding.


ATF, Coolant temp, avg MPG and AFR will most likely be my 4 shown gauges.



For diagnostic purposes, could you post the Short term and Long term fuel trim codes? Thanks!

Mine came with the HPR (horsepower) already on the preset gauges.. maybe they just started doing that?

But yeah, doesnt seem that accurate. I got it up to 166 once, so much for 20% drivetrain loss? lol
 
Now what did all of your Scan Gauges set up as: KWPS or ISO...???
