Scary torque on head bolts?

Installing the heads today, and I was surprised at the force required. 25ftlbs isn't much, but that second 90* rotation takes some oomph. I haven't done the second rotation yet, should it be pretty hard? Making sure before I put my 220 lbs behind them.

Just realized that my replacements don't have washers, am I bottoming out?

Measure your old bolts to the new ones below the head of the bolt. There should be a washer or they are designed to be re-used. Impossible for us to tell without being there if it's bottoming out. 25 ft lb's is not much, so use your judgement on the force required and measure the bolt length.

I did the head gasket on my Saturn a few years ago and torqued the bolts tighter than yours and then rotated them 90 degrees more. Till it was all said and done they didn't feel tight at all but no leaks.

When I did my heads I had the engine on a stand and it took an incredible amount of effort. I'm not the weakest guy either and I had a friend hold the engine/stand. I had to throw the whole body and hips into it and it was creaking along the way. It's no-joke clamping force.

Yes, you are correct in procedure (though I can't say for sure about the actual values/degrees). Most head bolts/studs require to be "snugged" before tightening, snugged being the 25 degrees. More than likely, you'll be hitting about 300+ Nm by the second 90*.

You can oil the bolts to prevent them from squeaking, but you have to use a lot of oil.

I just did the head gaskets on my '00 back in January. I couldn't believe how hard it was either. The bolts SHOULD have washers. I got new bolts and reused the old washers. I also bought a torque angle meter to be sure I had not gone to far, and far enough. Its easy to get confused with what you've done so far so that was a good tool. I had a pipe on the end of a breaker bar to get mine torqued for the second 90.

Yeah, I got them all in with washers, but I was nervous putting that pressure on aluminum.

Pretty sure FSM says to put oil on threads and under shoulders. I can look it up if someone needs it.

Also if you can't get angle gauge, a trick is to use a white out pen and put a dot or a small line on the top of the head of the bolt pointing directly forward. Then after both steps it should point straight rearward.

Agreed, but I would recommend putting it back exactly how it was.

Absolutely agree!! The oil is very important and those dots are too. No worries in knowing they are all done correctly.

I used oil and dots per the Toyota FSM. Got the camshafts installed.
Now I'm done with the technical stuff and ready to start bolting parts on!

Good job man! Home stretch for sure. Knock the manifolds and timing belt out and you will be about done. Good feeling for sure!

Manifolds and crossover on, lower plenum and inner timing cover on, wiring harness going in. Might be able to finish it up now that the kids are down.

Anyone know a part number for this coolant hose? The large one in the center.
The inner lining is failing.
