The T1804 is the older '04 - '05 single disk one; no knob, just buttons in the middle. Plays MP3s.
The 1805 is the 6-disk version of this 1804, which also has the color changing LCD. The CD player in this unit is know to have problems, especially if shipped incorrectly.
The 1807 is the '05 - '06 base model; single disk unit, knob in the middle, plays MP3s and WMAs, Aux input, no ipod ability.
The 1806 is the upgraded '05 - '06 model; still single disk, two knobs, has the color changing LCD, plays MP3s and WMAs, Aux input, and has ipod controllability.
The 1808 is the current base model. I think it has similar features to the 1806, but it has a new control layout. Also added AAC playback.
The T1809 is the new upgraded radio with multi-color Organic Electro-Luminescent display (OEL) for which you can upload different skins/graphics. I don't know much about it, but I'm pretty sure it'll do everything the T1808 will do as well.
All above models have satellite radio capability.
Then there is the new Alpine Scion Nav System (SNS).
I'm pretty sure I got that all right.

Thanks for the info guys. Too bad I jumped the gun and bought the wrong unit. Oh well I will install it and enjoy it until the model I want comes up on Ebay.
A couple questions about the install. (2004 model)
Are the panels that house the stereo components held on with clips? Should I just be able to wiggle them and pull them off? Are there any secret screws I need to know about?
Do I have to take off the panels around the gear shift and cup holders before I take off the stereo panels?

I have not seen the cable connectors in the 2008 4Runners; so I'm not positive. I would be VERY suprised if it was not Plug-N-Play.
I have seen the head units in the SR5 '08s, and it appears to have the same opening as previous model years.
Everything should work just fine.
You could remove your head unit, take a picture of the back, and post it. Then we will know better.

I'll do that when I take it out...its quite a hassle to remove just to take a pic.
the other thing i've read someplace is that the antenna hookups are different.....any thoughts on that?

The Scion head unit only has one antenna input. There is a piece of metal covering the second input. When I installed my Scion radio, I cut off the small piece of metal, and was able to plug both antenna cable into the head unit. Both 4Runner antenna cables do plug into the Scion head unit.
However, this does not improve reception, since the Scion head unit does not use the second antenna input. It is a dead end, inside the box. This means that radio reception is slightly better with the original head unit. But it also means that your 2nd antenna cable is not loose behind the dash.
BUT: AM or FM sound quality isn't as good as CD or MP3 or iPod anyway. In my mind, it was no great loss. We still listen to FM around town, with no problems.

I didn't do any splicing, or anything with amplifiers. The antenna cables plug right in to the Scion head unit. Just bend and remove the little metal cover over the second hole. The back of the head unit is layed out much like the standard 4Runner head unit.
My AM reception is just fine.
4Runners have their antennas in the rear-side windows. The original head unit uses both antennas (differential antenna). The Scion head unit only uses the primary antenna. Reception is slightly restricted, and orientation dependent.

I finally installed my T1806 with ipod control. A couple questions. How do you customize the lettering on the unit? When searching through artists is there a way to scroll faster (A,B,C) as opposed to sequentially through the list? It takes forever to get to U2. Is there a manual for the T1806? Thanks in advance

Sorry for the delay in answering.
There is a manual. I printed mine from somewhere online. I can't seem to track it down at the moment.
The lettering is a little difficult. I had to use the manual to figure it out. If you disconnect your battery, it will revert back to the default "Scion" letters.
I have not found a way to get through the lists any faster than what you have. It is a pain. So far, that is the only thing I don't like about these radios. I am going to pose this same question on a Scion forum, and see what the kids can tell me about it.

Just a quick question:
Do any of these units plug and play on a 2004 SR5? Just curious about the 1809. I don't have the JBL, just the base head unit. I'm looking for a good, OEM quality fit and finish for my new head unit and stumbled across this post.
