Scion HU...Whats the big deal?

I am new to the forum and new to my 05 4runner (only 2 days in!!!). First thing I noticed was I didn't have the JBL package and I cant find an AUX port for my iPhone :-( I see that some of you are putting the HU from the Scion in your 4runners and I like the "stock" look it has. I understand it is a plug and play install, however what are the pros/cons of doing this upgrade?

slightly more power & better sound. dont know what years have em, but there may be an aux. plug in inside the center console.

My 2005 w/ JBL does not have the aux input, my 2007 SR5 NON JBL has the aux.

I think that 2006 up came with aux in standard.

If I were going to bother w/ changing out the head unit, I'd go aftermarket for a considerably better sound w/ lots of extras like the aux in, USB, Sd card and other options. I understand and like the idea of a good cheap upgrade, but HU prices have come down so low that a good HU w/ lots of extras can be had for really cheap. Self install keeps the prices really low, and wiring harnesses keep you from chopping up your factory wires.

JMO on the subject, but think about what you want, and then wait.....wait some more.....read a bunch.....wait again and you will see that what you wanted has changed! At least thats my experience w/ my runners!

Scion HU's are gross looking. I installed the Pioneer in my sig yesterday and LOVE it. It's amazing and is great at ipod control.

The Scion units look like stock and blends in to the dash. If you call it gross - to each his own.

If you don't have a critical ear, the Scion unit can be had in the range between $25.00 and $100.00. AND is a very good upgrade for the money spent, and it's plug and play.

The Scion HU's advantages over the stock non-JBL 4R stereos:

- more power. Stock speakers sound much better.
- maintain steering wheel controls, no adapters needed
- MP3/ WMA/ AAC playback from burned CDROM
- ipod control from HU; also charges ipod while connected

It's a very easy plug-n-play upgrade, fits the dash cutout perfectly, no changes to any wiring (no adpaters or harnesses needed). If you want ipod control while keeping a stock-looking dash, this is the cheapest/easiest way to go. If you have an old (cassette) or non-functioning stock head unit, it's a great upgrade.

I had a Scion HU in my 4R; just replaced with a GPS nav unit, so I have it for sale in the Classifieds.
