Scratched Trim Piece

Hello All,

I had a question on how to go about fixing a scratched trim piece in my new truck. Now I'm not sure if the car was delivered to me this way or I was the one that caused the issue. But with only 1000 miles on the truck and no one sitting in the passenger seat my guess would be the truck was delivered this way.

The piece that is scratched is the metallic finished bar above the glove box. It looks like there is a pretty deep groove into the actual metal finish as I can catch it with my fingernail.

Here is the part I am talking about

First, how would you guys go about approaching the dealer in trying to fix this issue? Are toyota dealers pretty good about fixing this stuff for new vehicles or do they usually put up a pretty big battle? Little history as to the dealer I purchased the vehicle from (this is the second car I have purchased from them in 4 years, I get most of all my servicing done at this dealership, so I'm hoping they will be willing to help out)

Now if they are not willing to help out what options do I have to fix this? Is the metal piece above the glove box a pretty cheap and easy replacement or will it cost me an arm and a leg to replace? Are there "interior trim repair" shops?

Thanks for any advice you can provide in advance. This is driving me crazy.

Should be a pretty cheap part to replace. That stuff usually just snaps in and out on Toyotas but I'm not 100% sure how it goes together on the 2015. Should be less than $50 part.

I doubt they will fix it for free. Maybe push the issue and see if they will give you the part at cost...

I have a similar issue as yours, but have a different area with scratches. Mine is around the shifter/rear window button/heated seat buttons, that plastic is really easy to scratch. I found that 3M makes a vinyl wrap almost identical to the metal finish on the dash piece you have scratched and the shift knob itself has this finish too. It is a Brushed Stainless Steel part# 1080-BR201. I have some on order and plan on wrapping the plastic to cover and prevent scratches. This might work for you if they wont replace it and might save you some money from having to buy a new dash piece. Its a quick fix and no one will ever know or see any scratches. Scratches=loved

In a year you'll have a ton in those various trim pieces, if the dealer won't swap out I wouldn't spend much time or money on it.

I had a scratch on the trim piece by window switches- noted when I picked it up-dealer replaced whole door panel-only way to get that piece.

If I scratch it up - oh well. It will get repainted, stickered or emblem on top of it.

Heh, I bought mine new (same as [MENTION=89562]bimrunner[/MENTION] and [MENTION=77684]WarnerD9[/MENTION] I think). Back when I drove Acuras I would've cared, but the 4Runner is a workhorse. Every scratch and ding adds character and often has a good story behind it

First, try removing the scratch with a warm, damp Magic Eraser. I've already fixed 3 scratches on mine that way. I'm not sure why my wife has to swing her purse in the way she does.

What in the world is a warm wet MAGIC eraser, is this a brand, if it works where do you buy one as the plastic in the 5th gen is a lot more scratchable than in my old 2004.

My trim is getting scratched up too. I came across this in another thread and thought it was relevant. Many color options aside from wood. Haven't seen anyone with it installed though...

Mine wasn't scratched but I got tired of the wood grain so I recently plastidipped it. Last week actually. Removing that piece to get access to paint/dip was easy. There's a detailed write-up. Google "5th gen 4runner glove box" and you'll find it.

What happened to yours? Do you have a pic?
