SCS Ray10 17x9 and 285s-Whats required?

I really liked the stance on 4runners with the SCS F5 wheel in 17x9, but didnt really like the wheel itself. However, I have always liked the Ray10. A few weeks ago I realized SCS had begun stocking the Ray 10 in 17x9 in addition to the 17x8.5 they had always sold. Understanding that it would be a bit of a project to get them in the wheel wells I ordered 5 wheels from SCS. Before they even shipped I used an oscillating saw to do a fairly conservative nose job on the front valence. I trimmed it with rubber door edge guard from Amazon. That was easy enough once I convinced myself to make that initial plunge cut. I simply cut 1/8” below the tape I laid out and then used a sander to sand to the edge of the tape. We mounted up the wheels when they arrived to my BFG KO2 285/70/17s. These wheels are 17x9, 3.5” backspace,and -38 offset. The mudflaps had to go. I have SPC upper control arms and set them at 2 deg castor. The alignment was within spec on all counts. I had expected to have to do a BMC with these wheels and sure enough they rubbed the body mount pretty harshly in reverse...not even at full lock. I contacted Kevin at Southern Style Offroad to ask if he knew anyone in our area who could do the body mount chop and he said that they could take care of that in their new shop. I scheduled a consult there via the SSO website and took it there this morning. It required a very aggressive chop, but theres plenty room if I wanted a larger tire later on. Im happy with the wheels, the work, the handling, and the stance.

I ordered directly from scs(stealth custom series) website.

BMC- depends on their labor time involved.

I'm local to the area as well and SSO has done work on my rig in the past, great shop. How much room do you have between your tire and UCA? Considering same rim with slightly wider tire, if I can stuff it in there. 305/65/17 cooper

Also could you ballpark what you paid for BMC?

I have the F5 in 17x9. I was really hoping I wouldn’t need to do a bmc when I switch over to 285s but I guess I will have to plan ahead! Thanks for posting this up!

Most shops in Southern California that I have spoken to, do the BMC in the low 200 range. Maybe a little cheaper if you supply the plates.

Shop in Ft. Worth quoted me $150. Fortunately with the -10 SCS Ray10 and SPC UCA I didn't need one.

3.5” at sidewall. 4” to tread. I ended up with over an inch clearance at full lock between tire and body mount. And thats at only 2deg caster. Good luck!

Finally got these wheels mounted today with 305/65/17 cooper STT Pros, they rub ever so slightly at full lock on the lower fender caps, behind where the mud flaps were. Gonna trim some of that plastic and hopefully clear the tires. I can see how the 285's would clear perfectly. Looks and rides great!

I dont remember but they welded all edges of the fill plate/gussett and dressed the welds with a grinder.

OP - was there another motivation factor to go with the 9" -38mm offset vs the 8.5" -10mm offset?

Curious to know what (if any) is the advantage to running a 9" wide rim vs 8.5".

Also, what (if any) is the advantage to running a track width 2" wider.



I'm asking as I'm on ray10's myself - but of the 8.5" wide flavor (meaning -10mm offset). I have been contemplating ordering the 9" ones as I do like the much more aggressive look. Can't say I'm thrilled with doing a BMC but if the benefits are significant enough, might as well LOL.

Well... I guess MAYBE its arguable that the wider track offers more stability??? But... i wanted a wider rim for the 285s than the 7.5” factory wheel. The 8.5 would meet that requirment. I looked at so many photos on IG trying to decide. I was afraid to make the bmc plunge also. But in the end every single photo of an scs 8.5” wheel that i liked was also using a wheel spacer. I like the look, and THAT is what sold me. Its not for everyone but I must say...in my opinion...it is a baaaadassss combo.

It does look good IMO too.... which is why I was thinking of getting 17x9's with the -38mm cuz its basically the same, just more "lip" on the 9" wide wheels.

The 28mm difference is just over 1", plus you get 1/4" cuz it's wider which is effectively the 17x8.5" with the 1.25" spacer.

Yes, I put 265 K02's on my 4Runner with stock suspension/lift. Tires rub only when backing up on a slope and wheel cranked to the right.

Wanting a steel bumper to provide extra wheel clearance but would need beefier springs and shocks at the same time... Hoping Bitcoin goes up :whoo:
