"Sealed" transmission service observation

bought mine used at 115k miles...service rocords shows its was done @ 95k miles......guess a good for a long long while.............i dont tow

Well I did everything exactly by the book last night. Let it cool down for a couple hours. Added two more quarts of WS fluid (purposefully overfilled it). Jumped pins 4 and 13. Started the engine and went from P to 1 slowly...then back to P slowly. Then went N to D back and forth quickly to get into temp. check mode. Fluid was at a good temp so I pulled the check plug. Fluid rushed out. As soon as it went to a trickle I replaced the check plug.

In theory my fluid level should be perfect now. But I'm getting some odd feelings from the trans...especially when it's time to kick down and take off a little faster. Apparently these things are extremely finicky and the fresh fluid is making it act odd. Hopefully it'll straighten itself out over time.

That's one of the reasons I like being at the low end of the temperature range for the fluid check. Based on the amounts I measured while playing around with this a few times, the difference between the low and high end is about 6oz of fluid. Allowing for a some error, maybe it's even a little more than that.

There is information out there to the effect that the factory fill tends to be low and that it is (or was) a known issue. I suspect that is the reason for the temperature range change in the docs.

If I didn't live in a really hot climate, I'd probably overfill 6-8 oz above the overflow level at 97 degrees which would be more like 1/2 a quart above the overflow level at 115.

Apparently I have to change the gasket on my check plug because it's weeping fluid now. Ugh. So when I do that next week I will add 1/2 quart and call it a day.
