I'm trying to find a thread, of which I think Thai started, that described the disadvantages of the 4 wheel systems found in vehicles like the MDX. It made references as to why they wear out quicker.
Bottom line, the rear differential (the "heart" of VTM-4 system) is CLUTCH-BASED, as opposed to GEAR-based (as in Torsen center diff in 4runner & Range Rover). Clutch packs wear out with repeated use. Gears don't. In the MDX, you need to change out the rear differential fluid at 7500 miles. Why so often? Because VTM-4 is activated often (upon normal acceleration, off-roading, etc.). It is not a part-time system that is turned on only during off-roading. It gets activated at stoplight when you accelerate.
And if you don't change the fluid, you will burn the clutches...and thus, will need replacement...$$$$$. My old Honda CRV had clutch packs, similar to MDX but it was more mechanical (not electronic brain). I had to change the fluid every 30K miles. Why not as often as MDX?? Well, because the CRV system is rarely activated in normal driving (unlike MDX). The system requires 1-2 turns of the wheel before activating.
