Seat belt question

Does anyone know if the rear center lap belt "male" end plastic cover has any purpose? The belt seems to cinch down fine but it's being used for a child safety seat and I busted the plastic off trying to tighten the belt.

Anyone have a nice condition, center lap belt up for grabs? Advice, besides the obvious, junkyard or dealer replacement?

not yet. it's on the center lap belt in the rear seat. just above the part that goes into the buckle. I guess you could call it the "handle" that you hold when you buckle the belt. I think it's just a trim piece but I figured there might be someone here that might be able to enlighten me.
