seat is killing my spine.

The way the seat has that ridge at the top... It pushes into the middle of my scapula and spine in a way that causes a deep ache and my arms to go numb.

Has anyone modified their seat to get rid of the ridge? How difficult? What about loose cloth?

Thick covers not an option. Want OEM look and cant lose headroom.





Side question... Sr5 and te seat position the same? For some reason it seemed like sr5 seats were lower

Don't know about the seat modification, but for your second question:

The lower seat tilt function can make the seat seem like it is higher or lower by quite a bit. If you test drove two models it may have been set differently. Also, with and without moonroof makes a large difference in ceiling height.
 
As too your second question. I am 5'9" and if i put my seat all the way up and I have approx. 2 inches between my head and the sunroof/ceiling, all the way down, I feel like I am sitting on the floor (don't have a measurement)
 
Unfortunately it is probably not the seat.Sounds to me your Thoracic Spine needs an adjustment. Arms going numb is a good indicator of some sort of nerve impingement around the skeletal system.

Does it only happen in your runner?

I noticed now that this piece is concave... If i add just enough foam that it flattens out u may be OK.

I wonder how hard it is to pull the seat skin....

This super sweet high tech temporary mod takes the 'pressure point' out of the equation and it's way, way more comfortable.

So I think I just need to stick some 1/8" closed cell foam (ensolite) under the cloth and I'll be in business.





Anyone know how difficult skinning one of these seats is?

It looks like the front/back are secured with hog rings, and zipped up the side.
I wonder if I can just twist the rings, and undo the zipper without causing issues...

Another thing you can try is to reposition your arms. Try messing with different adjustments on the steering wheel. I don't know exactly what year or trim you have, but my runner has a telescoping steering wheel adjustment option. Maybe putting the steering wheel lower and closer to your body will help. That way you can always keep your arms on the arm rests. Just a thought.
 
Lucky for you the seat skins on these seats un-zip and you can access the entire seat surface with little effort. there is a zipper on both sides of the bottom rear of the seat. you have to do some digging to find the zipper, but once you do it is self explanatory.
 
Watch a few Katskinz installation video's on Youtube, and you'll have a real good idea of how the seat cover comes off. It's pretty standard across the industry, if I'm not mistaken. :laugh:
 
I also thoughy about notching the headrest post so i can move ot to a good position.

So i just got the replacement cost if i booger it up.... $434. What the actual f....
Now I'm afraid to unzip the seats. Those skins are probably $3000.
 
I know the Toyota Dealer in Fort Worth does full leather upgrade installed on all three rows for $1500 out the door... so don't think they would be $3K.

...Who knows though.
 
The front part of the cover appears to be sewn in.

I can do what i need by removing the back seat cover and reaching into the seat from the top, but I cant figure out how to get the black plastic caps off the headrest tubes... Thoughts?

I looked at other toyota forums, and they seem to have tabs at the bottom holding it in. There are no such tabs on the 4runner. Looking down the headrest guide tubes doesn't really shed much light on it either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'll check again and pull the seat cover fully through. I'm a little concerned about tearing the plastic tabs for the bottom hog rings.

Snapping and replacing hog rigs is probably a good bit easier than getting those headrest guides out.
 
You're right about the hog rings, but I only know from reaching up in the seat cover. I think they're intended to be hooked up from top to bottom, bringing me back to my original issue of needing to get the dang headrest guides out.


Found an exploded diagram for a 2012 seat. Looks like there are tabs in the middle. Unfortunately, the tabs are guarded by a little metal nub. I see no way of getting these headrest guides out.

I called an upholstery place, they suggested stretching the cloth over, worked great! FYI, anyone that might find this in a future search.
