Seatbelt tensioner questions

Hey everybody, I’m hoping there is somebody they can give me a hand with this question I have. I did some looking already and nowhere in the forums doesn’t really address when I’m about to ask, and I wasn’t able to respond to those threads anyway because it looks like they’re all archived or something, it didn’t allow me to ask a new question or put my two cents in. Anyway, hopefully someone else is also done this: I have a 2000 (2000!) 4runner that I need to replace the driver side seat belt completely. Now I have a new unit to go in, but I discovered that it doesn’t have the explosive squibb tensioner that tightens the belts in case of an accident. Turns out the seat belt that I have is for a 98, not 2000 Everything looks to bolt up fine except for that wire going to the explosive squib. Being that this is just a beat around the bush truck, does anybody know if it’s going to have a freak out if I unplug that squared and not hook up another one? I know it’s a safety thing, but I just am trying to make sure that The truck won’t have an aneurysm if I try to use this piece and not hook up that plug again. Any thoughts?

That's a tough one... I've ripped out the entire safety restraint system in a 2002 but I can't remember how exactly the front seat belts were wired up.If it's a single wire connector and the belt assembly itself is a ground, you should be ok. If it's a two wire connector where something might be disconnected as well if you don't connect it, then you might not have functioning air bags or other seat belts in the event of a collision.

If you read up from the 2002 manual? The air bags will deploy on 2001,2002 even if your seatbelt is not used? I think, it’s not 100% clear. The seatbelts tension themselves if an impact happens, so they work together but not only in a limmited way.

96-00 don't work as one and are independent, and my 97 has no sensor on the passenger side... so there are some differences in the earlier trucks as well.

I have seen people post pics of 4th gens going boom when the seats are messed with

'96-'98 have no explosive squib at all. So your truck will be looking for it and not find it. You WILL get a SRS light, but the system on an '04 should still fire your airbags if triggered, but obviously no pre-tensioning going on.

Goddamn speech to text: It is a 2000, Not a 2004. The truck I’m working on is a 2000. I need to be better at editing.

Guaranteed SRS light. Will not affect the functioning of the rest of the system though (or any other vehicle systems). On 99/00, all airbags deploy (two fronts and both seatbelts) in front-end collisions. 01/02 use the occupancy sensor to separate passenger side from the driver's side.

Just get a '99-'02 front seatbelt. Or you can put a resistor in place of the squib if you are willing to give up the pre-tensioning feature.
