Seattle elected the first Socialist to public office. At her 1st elected speech she stated, "we don't need executives! We need Boeing to be under 'democratic' public ownership by workers - by the community!" So now Seattle is back to being a two party town; democrats and socialists(is there a difference?). The college professor and social activist(shocker!) has roots in the Occupy movement(big suprise).


Where's Lee Harvey Oswald when we need him...:sniper:

I think if you haven't lived in the Willamette Valley or on the Sound, you don't know just how loonie that place is now - all the old school Berkely hippies moved north in the 80s and 90s, and got into grassroots politics, and now extremist leftism is the norm anywhere north of Eugene.

In some respects, that's great. A lot of that leftism is libertarian and green in nature, which is right up my alley. But a lot of it is hardcore socialist, too. They aren't electing commies on the east coast that I've heard, but they're getting traction in Seattle and Portland. And by traction I don't mean "running for election but being laughed at", I mean there are honest to god card-carrying Communists getting elected to city councils. City Mayor positions and the State Legislature will be next. It's insane what's going on out there.

Part of me thinks that's what they want. If we leave them to their own devices it will continue to get worse, and when they can control an entire state, it then turns into larger representation at the Federal level, and we get what we have today.


I would encourage people to take back their states and go against the grain. Avoidance is not the answer.

So true. And take all those high-paying aerospace jobs with 'em. But this stupid €unt hasn't thought it through. If they leave, who'll be left to foot the bill for her 'social justice' programs like "basket-weaving for trans-gender communist illegal aliens" ?

that's what CA and NY are working towards.

this state is ****ed, it REALLY needs to be split into 2 different states.

Go ahead, continue bashing Seattle. Fact is, Seattle is always voted the "Best Place to Live". I know, I live here and I loved it. You can be whatever you want to be here in Seattle. And isn't that what you call . . . oh yeah, FREEDOM!

Hey, it could work. Just give the newly publicly held Boeing the ability to print money like the Federal Reserve, and they'll thrive!! :rolleyes:

FWIW, Oswald was an extreme left communist.

Although it is amusing to note his own hypocrisy. When he lived in the then communist utopia of the USSR, he quickly realized that actual communism sucks. I think he just liked the idea of communism, as long as he could enjoy the benefits of living in a Capitalist society, while hypocritically railing against it.

If by dirty tree hugging pot smoking hippie is what you mean then yes... You can be all of that and get along with the majority of people on the west side of Washington.

I'm not completely bashing Washington. I spent a few years there. It's a beautiful state! It's very green and has a lot to do there. I love the mountains and Washington is right up there with Idaho and Montana for beautiful mountains. But aside from good real estate, I can't think of anything else that Washington has.

I actually grew up and spent my teen years there but eventually made my way down to Texas. Seattle physically is beautiful and many things to love about it; the water, the mountains, the seafood, etc. so its been painful to see it gradually fall to such painful socialism. Take for example the recent decision of SEATAC (which is the main airport as well as a municipality of its own) to raise their minimum wage to $15/hour!! Heck why not pay everyone $20 or $30 per hour...? I guess they forgot Thatcher's classic quote that "the problem with Socialism is eventually you run out of other people's money".
But everything is cyclical so I agree it would be nice to take the city back to sanity someday... but they might have to hit bottom (i.e.: Detroit) before they realize the error of their leadership....

seattle, and the west side of the mtns is only a small fraction of Washington.
yet, most people equate seattle with ALL of Washington.

this state needs split, western Washington, and everything else.

This is true. Eastern Washington and Oregon are a vastly different cultural climate, much closer politically to the Great Basin states.

Doesn't matter though. You're all hippy dirtbags. :flipoff:

There's been some debate about splitting states but I'd be surprised if it happens in today's politics. It failed miserably in CO and even if it passed a state vote, they couldn't have supported themselves as a state, and it would have never made it through the federal process.

My suggestion is to push for something easier... like redrawing state lines. It's not always clean cut, but I imagine some of these more traditional rural areas would much rather be aligned with a similar state than one that seems to attract lefties to their large metro areas.
 
I think the cultural/political split between east and west PNW is greater than the difference between northern and southern California.
