Second Filter element

I have an 03 SR5 V8. After checking out the air filter I noticed a second carbon air filter. Has anyone taken this out?

I had an 05 X-Runner with the 4.0 V6 and removed this filter and seemed my MPG increased compaired to others.

Just wondering if anyone had removed theirs, it was rather easy on the V6, drill a couple of rivets and pull.

No it would be silly to assume that carbon granules would restrict flow. And then it would the high emissions rating awarded to the vehicle.

This is in place to adsorb hydrocarbons that might evaporate from the intake manifold with the truck at rest to meet emissions requirement.

Its presence is not going to affect mpg. If it becomes restrictive it might affect max HP generation. This seems unlikely with the paper filter upstream.
