Secondary air injection pump nightmare: 2005 4 Runner V8

My new (to me) 2005 V8 has several codes related (from what I understand) to a air injection pump related to emission control on startup.

This does not affect performance at all, but, from what I'm told, will put it into "limp mode" when it fails. The price quoted from the dealership: $2800

Apparently an aftermarket bypass circumvents the pump completely at around $200.

This vehicle has been a major disaster, no doubt.


My question: If I install the bypass, will it still pass emissions?

As far as my knowledge goes (based on reading about this bypass): yes, it will pass emissions.

The bypass kits will not affect the emmisions testing.
The AIP system only works for 20 secs or so on a cold startup.
If you bring a warm truck to emiisions testing they will never know the difference.

I have a 08 tundra 5.7 and they went out on it at 30k and while it was at the dealership getting fixed I received a notice that my warranty will be extended to 150k on this problem. Why have they not done that on the 4.7 if it's obviously a problem?

There's a thread some where on here where I and a few other members discussed that Toyota SHOULD cover the 4Runner and Land Cruisers under their warranty enhancement (which covers only the Tundras and Sequoias equipped with the 2UZ-FE [4.7L V8] and 3UR-FE [5.7L V8] engines) based on the very similar design of the Secondary Air Pump system and how they seem to fail across the board in similar fashion.

Yea seen that. Worries me a little on my wife's 08 GX470 78k miles without any warranty left on it.

I've driven the vehicle probably 20 miles since I've bought it. So far the transfer case has had to be replaced, the heater doesn't work and now the injection pump. I'm in over $4K and it's picked up the groceries once.

Uhm, what did the previous owners do to that thing??!!! These don't have issue's with things going out constantly. Got yourself either a lemon, or the previous owners really messed some shit up and hid it from you.

Sorry to hear you got a lemon. Just curious, what was wrong with the transfer case? Never heard of anyone needing to replace the entire TC before, just the actuator, unless they beat the hell out of it off-roading or something

This is the only bypass kit I've ever seen.
