security system led replacement????

i would like to take the wires that run to my factory security system led and run them to the dash with a different, prefereably blue led. has anyone ever tried this??? i was wondering it the system would still work properly

hahaa, maybe people are scared to respond. I'm never afraid of looking stupid so I'll throw this out there. It shouldn't be too hard swapping an LED on your alarm system. Just wire up the new one the same as the old. There should only be two wires so it isn't rocket science. oh yeah, don't get the infared LEDs at Radio Shack... :

ya i think it would make my alarm seem aftermarket and fend off potential theives that want my system

the only thing i don't know is how much resistance all of the wiring would add to the system, thats a lot of wire to run from the ebrake area to the left side of the dash. but i don't think that would affect the alarm system itself.

I am guessing you are not getting a response because this is not the "Audio & Electronics" section of the board.

In theory this should be no problem. I have a 4th gen. so I'm not familiar with the wire, but Sharp4Runr is probably correct- there is probably just two wires. Check it first though, because I have seen aftermarket LEDs where the ground was actually a wire with a hole down the center, and the positive wire ran down the middle, insulated. THAT would be essentially impossible to tap into. BUT, if it is set up in a normal fashion, you should just be able to splice into the wire.

To answer your last question, LEDs have such low resistance that you should have absolutely no problems running a wire from the e-brake area up through the dash and out by the driver's door.
