Security system unaware when tailgate is opened

Alright, this has been bugging me now that I've been driving the 3rd gen more. When I unlock the 4Runner with the fob and open the tailgate the security system will lock all the doors again after 30-60 seconds as if none of the doors have been opened. If I open any of the other doors the system does not re-lock (as is supposed to happen). Anyone know what part is malfunctioning?

My 97 does this as well. When it happens the hatch switch isn’t working. When it works the indicator on the dash lights up. My rear hatch dome light only comes on when the switch works........I think.

I think the switch is part of the latch assembly.

Second vote for the switch in the hatch latch. Put the rear dome light on "door" and you can see if it is operating correctly (or watch for the door ajar light on the dash). I think it can be cleaned and re-lubed to get it working again. Another possibility is broken wires in the harness between the body and hatch.
