See A Cop...Do You Flash On-coming Traffic?

Hey all,

I have been debating with myself for years now on this topic. If you're traveling down the highway and see a cop hiding and aiming his radar towards on-coming traffic (traffic going in opposite direction as you), then do you flash your highbeams down the road to warn on-coming traffic of a speed trap?? At first, i did this...however, my brother reminded me that, being in TX (where there is a lot of contraband trafficking from Mexico), it is probably a good thing for cops to setup these speed traps. Therefore, if i flash on-coming traffic, then i may be helping/aiding illegal activity.

Most of my travels are to work down a country road through 3 small towns with no more than 3,000 people each....hence the P.D. has nothing better to do, and I don't need to get on their bad side, ya know?

Besides, everyone on this road knows that the locals sit and wait and will get you when you start to approach about -10 m.p.h. over the limit which is all you want to do on this road anyway.....but there are a lot of morons out there.

The last part of my commute is on a highway that is usually crawling with staties.......And since the buffoons in Mass. need more money they are stepping up patrols and tickets.

If you are that stupid to drive that fast, you get what you deserve.

Then again I voted that I am just mad at life........

I'm choosy about if I will flash or not. Sometimes the police will set up in a bad place where it can be hard to avoid a little extra speed, like at the bottom of hills, or 50 ft past a reduction in the speed limit. I'll probably warn others about that crap if I can. Other than that, if your speeding, then too bad. :happens:
I will never warn other cars about DUI checkpoints. Drunk drivers deserve all they get plus more....

Don't cops and ex-cops get an automatic "get out of jail" card if stopped by a fellow cop??

On the highway maybe but not in neighborhoods where speeds should be low or near schools/kids.

Not necessarily. Sure, there is "professional courtesy" - which certainly does indeed exist; but it is not always granted and should never be expected by anyone.

I used to be a deputy sheriff, so take my word for it. Besides, I doubt I ever ticketed even 10% of people I stopped; lots of warnings, though.

+1 to that, sir. I did the same thing (and still often do) when I thought it was a "trap" where revenue enhancement overshadowed the concern for public safety.

Then again, I was never much of a 'traffic hound' because we were too busy with "real crime" to worry that much about writing speeding tickets.



P.S. If you are a cop and drive a bit fast in your personal car and still write a lot of speeding summonses to others who do the same, that makes you a hypocrite in my book.

As for "flashing other drivers" in the tag line, I thought this had something to do with busty young ladies trying to get my attention as they drove past me.

Hmmm, as a cop, i would imagine that you know the difference between reality and delusional thoughts of grandeur while on drugs..........................AND YOU SIR ARE ON DRUGS!

Used to do it more, but then pretty much stopped. Started doing it again in the town next to where I live since it's just one big speed trap.

Not always, last year a Uncoi County deputy was stopped on the interstate in his patrol car by the Tennessee Highway patrol and got a ticket for speeding..

I only wish that this practice was more widespread - I only got 3 or 4 warnings from other drivers in all years driving in US.

It is much more popular in Europe.

Like you, i did it often at one point...however, what if that one traffic stop could have stopped a shipment of cocaine or illegal immigrants into our country?? I don't know the answer behind this question(s)...just throwing it out there. Because of this, i am not so fast with my highbeams anymore.

It all depends, Some cops will just lecture you and let you go, and other will say this classic line..."You should know better".

I totally agree. That was one of my largest pet peeves. When a patrol would bring me a ticket for speeding and I know he goes faster than the guy he wrote the ticket for.

You ought ot see how these freaking marked cruisers are flying around here. I respect and work with law enforcement routinely in my job, but I always found it hyporcitical when I am tooling along the road going maybe 5 over and a statie, deputy, or local yokle blows by me without the lights on.

Just blows my mind sometimes - especially since the state is broke and needs to save money and I see a fleet of Crown Vics or Chargers flying by me going 80 or more.

I definately do flash people most of the time. However, someone once put it into my head that it's illegal to flash and you can get pulled over under some statute. Anyone ever heard of this?

I tend to stray from flashing too much at night.

Traffic stop that results in cocaine shipment bust?.. hmmmm... That definitely presents a moral dilemma - flash the high beams or let this country drown in cocaine Gotta think about that... Yeah you have a point there.

Yes, it is... But somehow I do not see any young Americans doing these jobs (and MANY others). And if they do, they need a 10 minute break every hour, 1 hour for lunch, and they can not work more than 8 hours a day and 40 hours per week. :bash:
