I have been watching new and used prices for a while. Assuming the asking price of used cars is in the ballpark of the selling price (which may be a large assumption), generally it does not make sense to buy used, unless you catch a deal. A very typical example in Autotrader: 2008 4runner, 4x4 $27,000, 43,400 miles (not a limited but with a power seat). Let's say the dealer will go down to $25,000. For another 13,000 or so, you can get a new 2011 trail edition, since they are selling them close to invoice--and that comes with newer technology and 10% better gas mileage. Assuming you can afford the ticket to play, to me a new one is a better value (albeit with a bit higher insurance toll). I have noticed this same fact with other Toyotas.
The other noteworthy fact is that at least in my area most recent 4runners are being sold by dealers, not private parties. The ones sold by private parties are usually much older. This may be a good sign that people are happy with their 4runners and don't sell them too often.
