yea you and me both. I can eat and drink while driving stick. Can even hand my baby boy his bottle too lol.

Do I enjoy doing that with a manual? No.

But I enjoy shifting

From an offroading perspective, the 99's had slightly taller coil springs and the rear diff lock option, and of course was the 1st year with all the 'facelift' mods. 2000 also still had the locker, but not the taller springs.

I have a '97 limited and it has the rear locker on it, did someone put it aftermarket or was it like that from the factory?

sorry for the double post, but yes you could get a 96-00 with the rear diff lock from the factory, i dont think it was only an option for limiteds either, but i have 97 and its limited and has a diff lock so... im not sure. but yes that came from the factory.

If a manual was safer then insurance companies would be all over that, with either discounts for manuals or penalties for autos. Clearly they don't.

The manual v's auto safety debate is as old as it gets and is one of the all time favorite car enthusiasts discussions. All it ever comes down to is opinion.

For me, I think it's safer to drive a manual, but that's just me. I find that I spend too much attention wondering what the tranny will do next when I drive an automatic. I also really hate driving automatics and tend to lose focus when driving an auto. Also, I use a lot of engine braking and when going down a steep hill, I start off in the lower gear and just hold it there until I need to upshift. I forgot I was in an automatic and the car sped down like it was in neutral down the hill until I pressed on the brake, but like I said, it's just me not being a safe driver in an automatic cause I just don't pay attention. I don't even feel like I'm driving when I'm in an automatic. Manual's aren't safer, they're just safer for me. At least I won't slam into building by accident because I thought I stepped on the brake cause if I was reaching for the brake at low speeds, I would be reaching for the clutch too. I see too many of that here where the person is parking and slams on the gas instead of the brake and crashes into a building. Not as likely to happen in a manual.

If someone hits the gas when they mean to hit the brake, it's because they are re****ed, not because the car is manual or auto. One or the other might make an idiot more prone to crash, but if you are not stupid, then there is no difference in safety between an auto or a manual. The difference is completely in the empty suit behind the wheel.

I hate to admit this, but I have slammed on the gas before when I meant to brake. My foot slipped off the edge of the brake and slammed on the gas. However, I had the clutch in so I didn't go anywhere. I cringe when I think back to that day and what woulda happened if I had an auto. (before I get flamed, this was a looooooong time ago right after I got my license).

Well, gotta respect your honesty, but that sounds more like an accidental foot slip, not so much being dumb. You're absolved!!

On the other hand, I was teaching an old girlfriend to drive a stick and she let the clutch out all at once, panicked when it started bouncing, and she drove my truck into the corner of my parent's house!! haha! Luckily they were gone for the weekend and I got it all patched up and painted before they got home and I don't think they even know about it to this day! I should tell them now, they would think it's funny, especially since they don't live there anymore (and it's been about 15 years! The truck was fine ('86 Yota Xtracab P/U).

Haha...thanks! Yeah, I remember when I first learned standard and the car would hop around. I remember the first time trying to start on a steep hill. When the light turned green and I was ready to go, I didn't roll back at all...unfortunately, I didn't move forward either...that poor clutch...haha.

Sometimes in auto's i go to downshift, end up nailing the brake with my left foot, that damn brake pedal is too big, I've only done it a few times, but it scares the hell out of you.

manuals definately give better throttle control when drifting those S curves in the snow...you can hold those higher rpms and not worry about the tranny thinkin you want it to shift.
