Sell my 06 to buy a 2002

I have been thinking about this for months and need a little help. I have a 06 v6 sr5 4x4 with 80k miles and problem free. I need to have a 4 door truck so the 4runner is my only option. Ill have a toyota in my garage for life!!!

Am I crazy to want to sell my 06 for about $16,500 and buy a 3ed gen 01 or 02 t4r for around $10k. If I am patient I can find a runner with under 120k miles. Its gotta be clean with a little maintenance history. Ebay has a few but it does scare me a little buying a truck off of ebay.

These runners are becoming far and few between, just a side note i have a 2 year old and wife has twins due in 8 weeks so carseats gotta fit. My wife has a pilot so i am kinda the back up when it comes to hauling kiddos. Will 3 carseats even fit in the 3ed gen runners?

I guess it all depends on your personal situation and if you need to downgrade due to finances. I wouldn't do it. I think the 4th gens are all around a nicer vehicle and give you more room. You already know the maintenance history on your rig and would be rolling the dice on another. I say stick with what you got.
 
Its all about preference. Ive had two 3rd gens prior and made the mistake of selling my last one for a Titan( that only lasted two months) and wanting to get another 3rd gen but sport model. I couldnt find a clean one in my area at the time. Now I have a 4th gen I love it but its not a 3rd gen. The 4th gen does ride smoother like a car and have a tad more room along with the expected updates. I suppose I like the truck feel. Ultimately, I think it falls on what is comfortable for you and what you are looking for in your SUV.

After finally buying my 4runner just 2 days ago and looking every single day within 100mile radius of me for 3 months, I can tell you that finding a clean well taken care of 4runner is a hard and fairly annoying task
 
If I were you I'd post this thread in the 3rd gen section. They'd be the ones to ask about the whole car seat thing plus who knows, you might find a member willing to do a trade

A few things.

I'm 5'10" with longish arms so I like the seat reclined. I can fit a rear facing child seat behind the driver.

With two seats and an adult in the middle it's cramped. And trying to get anyone in between without removing a seat would be a non-starter, even for a 2yr old. I'm doubtful 3 car seats would fit.

Lastly, want to trade? All kidding aside I'd keep what you have now.

Thanks guys, Its starting to look like i might need to keep my 06 as it is a little bigger. The reason behind getting a 3ed gen is i miss all of my 1st gen tacomas and a 3ed gen t4r is the closest i can get to a 1st gen taco.
 
4th gens are a safer all around vehicle with more interior room as well. If you're trying to scrounge up some cash in a vehicle swap, why not swap out your low mile 4th gen for a high mile, probably easier to find, you keep all the benefits of the 4th gen and come up with a little cash as well.
 
You are crazy. Keep your '06 - it is a far better family vehicle.

Your '06 is much safer. It is less likely to rollover and it has side curtain airbags. And as others have pointed out, no way in heck you will fit 3 car seats in an '02.
 
Yea good point! My 06 is paid for!
I am gettin ready to be due for some minor maintenance so ill just do the maintenance and keep on driven! I ride the bus/my bike to work so my ride only gets taken out on the weekends for mtn biking, snowboarding, act.
 
4gen for 3rd

Know what you mean miss my 03 taco dbl cab , but man those seats were really bad even after I spent 100$ a piece for more padding . I gotta say 4gen really are better as far as safer and such ( don't want 3rd gens :50cal: ) I mean to say little bit nicer I guess as far as interior and all :focus:
 
Recently made this decision, my mom's Previa van was totaled while parked outside our house. $10k for a mint 3rd gen limited or $14.5k for a 4th gen sport w/88k.

I chose the 04 Sport because of the on-road comfort and smooth ride. You can put some car seats in it, do your errands, good car. Airbags and whatnot keep you safer. Traction control for when it gets hairy. I am happier knowing that she has a safe car that can withstand a bad wreck. Our neighbor had an 08 Sport that was T-boned hard, she wasn't injured.

The 3rd gen is it's own beast, though. Once you own one, you'll be hard pressed to let it go. Each vehicle serves similar but separate purposes IMO. You can also buy one with a manual transmission.
 
If you are looking for 16,5K you are probably going to get closer to 15,5K. From that you have to pay taxes and tags for your new vehicle. Your profit margin will shrink quickly. I wouldn't expect to pocket much cash if that is your motiviation.
 
Pocketing cash is not my motivation and I never accept offers when selling cars or trucks. I keep a close eye on the local market and there are no 4th gen 4runners for sale unless you want a 2007 with 150k miles for 16k. Or a 1998 with 270k miles for $5k.

That is why I own Toyotas and Hondas they hold their resale value and are very desirable, at least in my area they are. People love Toyotas, ill always have one in my garage!!!
