Sell my '96 2WD for '00 4WD?

Wife and I were driving around today and passed a 4Runner for sale, usually I don't stop but today I did. It's a 2000 Limited 4wd (non-locked) with 150,000 mi. I called and guy's asking $4500. Exterior looks good with a few blemishes.

We've owned our 1996 SR5 2wd since 2004. It's got 240,000mi, runs well, but has a few cosmetic issues... It's the Anthracite color, so the hood paint is completely shot, along with the roof and most of the high edges (those closest to the sun) on the doors. Interior has carpet stains, ripped driver's seat.

To the point: I'd like to sell mine and grab this 2000. I'd hope to get $2-2.5k and take a stab at talking him down a bit. I'm afraid of this being an impulsive buy, but I've always wanted a 4wd, and have limited myself in the modding dept. since I didn't want to do it on a 4wd.

I need some of you smart, third party folks to talk me down or push me over the edge...

I sold a 99 Limited 4X4 that had over 200K and was dented and had a crooked front bumper and still got $4,500 for it. If its a good deal go for it, i not have a different 99 limited 4X4 with 234K on the clock and love it to death and would never have a SR5 after getting used to my features

It'd be hard for my wife to go for either of the '97s. They're both over 200k and look too much like the '96. I understand her logic... the '99+ look like different trucks (they are, but you know what I mean).

I really like the '99, low miles and actually the year I'd prefer. Couldn't hurt to call about it, but I'm sure coming out of a used car lot it's going to be more than we wanted to pay.

I've been beat to runners like this on 3 different occasions. Any 4x4 3rd gen that runs good with 150k or under for less than $5k will be gone in a heartbeat in my area. You'll find a better one though. Good luck in your search

It doesn't have to be that way. I've been particularly lucky with most of the cars I've owned. But, I've always had the time to wait out a deal.

A vehicle, or any commodity, is worth something different to everyone. I don't know about first rule, but a rule of economics, haha.
