Serpentine Belt Replacement 04 V-6

Well among other maintanece performed today a new serpentine belt was in the works.

I was quoted from toyota this
Belt : 88 bucks
Install: 100-175 bucks.


I purchased a premium belt from Napa
PN#070834 for 33 bucks.

Parts needed:

1 14MM open end wrench
1 Friend to hold tensioner so you can slip on the belt. (optional)

Here is a diagram that was very helpful!

Save yourself some cash and do this easy belt change yourself!

Thanks for the post and the diagram. Just curious how many miles are on your runner and was your belt showing any signs of wear??? I was planning on doing this also but was going to wait until the 3 year mark. Apr of 07 for me. Thanks.

I had 40K on it. The belt had lots of embedded rocks and dirt in the actual ribs of the belt.

It was chirping and slightly squealing on cold starts. The belt probably could of been run longer, but the noise was annoying.

Its a cheap and easy task to proform!

Good thing you changed it before it broke or starting slipping really badly; then you would have to realign the timing marks. Better yet, it may have jumped timing and you would've towed it to the dealer for some more of those outrageous price quotes!!!

Not the Timing Belt???? The V-6 Has a Timing chain. The accessory drive belt is what he changed. Even if it broke the worst thing that would have happened would be a tow to a shop and an overpriced repair. The water pump would have stopped along with the power steering pump, alternator, A/C compressor. No harm done unless you were to continue driving and let it over heat. No Timing involved.

I've had mine changed three times so far, under warranty for the idler pulley TSB for belt noise. Last time was about a year ago, so I am going to wait until it starts making noise again.

I changed one out on a Corolla yesterday. Used a Goodyear Gatorback - $33. The original belt had 6 years and 60k on it.

Draw a diagram of the belt path before you remove it.

I took my wife's in 3 times to have the dealership listen to the noise..

They kept telling me it was nothing... I was afraid it was AC or waterpump..

Now it is out of warranty, I will be checking the belts/pulley's tonight. She said it is loud now...

how many miles are you guys change the belt at?? I have 33k on the 4r and my belt look new! no crack or anything on the ribs whatsoever.

I cannot find the replacement schedule for the Serpentine belt, in my Owners manual (the blue schedule maintenance guide). I am coming up on 60 K miles for my 2003 V8. I am thinking on changing it soon. There should be a Gates belt out there?

There is a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) on this issue. EG012-03. According to the bulletin, it is covered under the Toyota Powertrain Warranty which is good for 60 months or 60,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

Goodyear makes a nice belt. My brother put one on his 03 Tundra, so they make a V8.

I found it for the V8 4runner. Goodyear pn# 4060882

The first digit [4] represents the type of belt (K-section Poly-V belt)
The second & third digits [06] represent the number of ribs = six ribs
The 4th, 5th, & 6th digits represent the length in inches = 88 inches long
And the last digit [2] represents the tenths or fractional length =0.2 from 2/10
Therefore the belt is 88.2 inches long.

Advance auto parts carries this Gatorback serpentine belt for $ 38.00.

I must get one of these!!

No I cannot see the picture in the first post nor I care to. For the V8 engine: the serpentine drive belt is removed by loosening the tensioner pulley which is located just right of the power steering pump. (in-line with the power steering pump and the fan). To loosen the tensioner, turn the bolt counter-clockwise. Do not try to remove this bolt. Once loose you can push on it to relieve even more tension. Replace the belt and use the routing diagram printed on the hood of the vehicle. Place the belt around on pulleys except the very top idler (located just above the fan. Push on the tensioner if necessary to fit the belt on the last top idler pulley. That step could use a third hand. Then tighten the tensioner up.

There seemed to be some confusion about where the belt runs. On my 04 V8 there is a nice diagram of how to run the serpentine belt under the hood. Take a look - nice job Toyota!

You're not doing anything wrong. Boaz hasn't posted in a while so the place where he hosted the image is probably dead and that's why you see the red X.
