Service manuals: no Chilton or Haynes option?

I'm due for my 10k service. Already being prone to paranoia of having other people do any work of any kind, the horror stories I've seen about dealership service just further pushes me to want to just deal with it myself. Plus, I'm at 9400 miles and leaving for a trip through SW Colorado and into Utah, so I'm about to rack up around 1500 miles and the dealership doesn't have any openings before I leave. I want to at least change the oil and get over to Discount for a five wheel rotation, but I was looking at grabbing a Chilton or Haynes manual for general reference only to see that there apparently isn't anything. Is the only option the expensive Toyota subscription thing?

No, I've got a handle on the oil change, but would love a manual for general purpose. For example, as a long-term rear-wheel drive owner, I've never changed a CV axle. I'm sure it's relatively easy and I'm pretty damned handy, even if I haven't done much car-wrenching in a long time. It'd be nice to have diagrams and a guide to doing basic maintenance and field repairs.

I emailed Haynes about the likelihood of a manual for the 5th Gen 4Runner last year. Received a somewhat curt reply. Antman's post mentioned above is all you need for an oil change.

A member named nashman69g provided the following a few years back. It contains a great deal of the 2010 factory service manual. Many of the tasks outlined in it apply to the different years of the 5th Gen line.

Hello Haynes, I wanted to know if there are plans to offer a Haynes Repair Manual for the 2010-2016 (or fifth generation) of Toyota 4Runners. I found your earlier version (2003-2009) very helpful during my ownership of a 2003 Toyota 4Runner, but I'll be soon buying a used 2011 4Runner and did not see a repair manual listed on your website. Please advise. Thanks!

Ive owned 10+ used vehicles before i finally bought my 5th gen and each car i owned had a Haynes manual in the garage. Hopefully by the time i start getting into doing my own work on the 4runner Haynes will have a manual out

Exactly. Sometimes I've owned two. One to get beat to hell and covered in grease and oil in the garage, one clean one for reference in the house. Right now I have two Park bicycle service manuals for that same reason.

This works well. You can download as many files in PDF format as you have time and patience for while your subscription is current. The 5th gen manual probably consists of about 600 files, so downloading it is a bit of a chore, and some organization is necessary afterwards so you can find things. It is, however, a relatively inexpensive and legal way to get the exact manual for your vehicle.

There is a full set of all 6 OEM factory service manuals for 2011 on eBay for $1600, been there for almost two years now, I suspect someone will eventually buy them.

If/when Haynes ever does release a 5th Gen 4Runner manual, it will now only be a digital download and not a published book.

Of course, Toyota has to end production of the 5th Gen (and move on to the 6th!) before that ever happens.
