Servicing LSD Differential?

My 3rd gen surf has an LSD differential, but due to age, it now basically acts as an open diff. I heard that this is a common problem with the "clutch pack" wearing out and needing service and adjustment. Has anyone done this and can comment on what's involved?

Hey, I've never heard of LSD's in 3rd gens, that's awesome that the surfs had that option. I know this isn't exactly for a third gen, but here's a link to a YouTube video about rebuilding a LSD. This guy ChrisFix has some really in depth detailed how to's and this should at least give you an idea of what you'll be in for.

Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUJ9h_-t_e0

Might want to look into replacing it with a TrueTrac carrier if you're going to pull the diff to service it, especially if replacing the clutch packs involves disturbing the gear setup. It has torsen gears and they don't wear out like clutch packs. They also have a high torque bias so it essentially limits the slip more aggressively. But if you wanted that there might be upgraded clutch pack material or springs to cause it to hook up more.

I like this idea... torsen style diffs are pretty nice but they still go open with a wheel off the ground.

Alternately, if you do get a tire off the ground on a regular basis, maybe a true locker is what I would consider as an upgrade.

Pull the e-brake a click and then it acts as a full locker. :bounce:
