Shaking when taking off, tranny?

1999 4runner with 265000 miles on it, was running great.
Just started to have issue, I noticed the idle would go up and down a bit while idling. That went away. Then it started to shake taking off and driving, like only few cylinders firing under load or tranny. I got around the block and it started to smell a bit...something was burning.

The fluids were on the low side...low oil, low tranny, and low coolant. I had checked it all two months back. I put more fluids in, didn't help. The oil looks a bit on the frothy/bubbly and a bit dark. Makes me think leak.

Is this the tranny going out? A leak inside like the water pump...which his due to be replaced in 5k miles? Any ideas? Shift solenoid?

I see no puddles under the truck.

I'll take to the shop on this one but not sure if I should take to tranny shop first. It has to be towed.

The rear frame has some rust areas that need repaired ...a few thousand. So, it may not be worthy of repair. How to dispose of a 4runner if this turns out to be pricy fix? Has fresh wheels and brakes...sad...what a great truck it's been!

Any CEL codes or pending ones? If you don't have a reader, use autozone or like place, free reads. Start here, it can point the rest of the direction.

If no codes then when was last time plugs & wires replaced?

How about MAF and IAC cleaning?

Good thoughts:

* cleaned top end at dealer 60k ago..woudl think that cleaned MAF IAE...and maybe it is getting dirty due to the rough idle..that makes sense. but it runs ok in gear in general.
* see no lights...I'll get a reader, good idea
* plugs and wires were long time ago (guilty)...

When you take off easy (gentle on the throttle) does it still do it?
If you accelerate hard from a stop it may be the trans. chattering.
Try it in low as well as drive. Make sure trans fluid is full.

I have a 2002 with 240k miles and just had an issue that sounds very similar, it would idle rough and when applying throttle it would vibrate/shake at RPM speed, not at wheel speed. If the vibrations during throttle application feel the same at different speeds (meaning different gears), then it is probably engine. I replaced the coils, spark plugs, and wires and the issue was resolved instantly, I don't know which one was causing the issue but I figured might as well replace all. I also would recommend doing a compression test while you are replacing the spark plugs, it is a good indicator on the health of your engine.

Try this:

Put foot on brake, hold brake. press accelerator pedal while holding brake.
If it starts shaking it is most likely breaking down (miss firing), plugs, coil etc. Don't do this very long as this can create excessive heating of the transmission fluid, but a minute or so wont hurt. A transmission chatter will many times have an odd chattering sound.
(I'm not sure how to explain it)
Pull the plugs first before swapping parts out and see how badly worn they are and see if one plug is distinctively different looking than the others and start with that cylinder. If two plugs look different than the other and they both fire off the same coil, suspect that coil as the culprit.

I agree with T4R2014. Plugs or wires. Mostly the check engine light is thrown on a misfire. The CEL will also flash.

Could be a coil but they mostly last quite a while on the 3rd gens.

If you go do a resistance check on the coils. Very that removable boot and wire in the boot isnt bad. Lots of good coils get replaced because the boot wire goes bad.


You can see if you have any pending codes too.

They run like crap when a cylinder or 2 are misfiring. Really rough and no power. Shaking and the exhaust makes a puffing sound and not smooth then running too.

Update

Installed new plugs, they looked somewhat worn. did not fix
checked engine codes...none!

It generally idles and misses while idling and sometimes accelerating

pulled each plug while idling...could not find a bad coilpack.

Putting on new wire set next.
Also thinking running sea foam through it...

Either seafoam or a double dose of injector cleaner may help. Will rule out sticky/clogged injectors that way. Royal Purple also makes a good injector product, the Max Atomizer. I use it to smooth out my idle since I run non-stock spark plugs.
