Shell Rotella Gas Truck 0W-20 - anyone try yet?

I've been running M1 for about 30k, with one switch to Pennzoil in there, which I thought ran quieter than the M1, but went back to M1 anyway.

Went to my favorite oil store last night in preps for a change tonight, and they had the new Shell Rotella for Gas Trucks (red bottle). After reading about it, I picked some up and will put it in tonight. Says it's made for SUV's and good for extreme heat, but they all say that, lol

Just wondering if anyone else has tried it, it was about $5 cheaper than the M1 for the 5qt at WM.

never used this but its read great reviews on diesel trucks and audis. Its oil and probably a better price, itll be fine
 
I have no concerns over trying it and know its just another oil with a brand specific additive package, just wondering if anyone has tried it yet in the 4runner? I did some reading on it as well, rotella is respected in the diesel community. I was actually at the store to pick up some pennzoil for a second try when I saw the shell and it was less $.
 
Post back and let us know what you think. Rotella is good stuff and a lot of people are using it in VW's with turbos. Even though the VWs and Audi's require 502 oil, people have good results with Rotella and a lot less oil burn-off.
Our toyota's don't burn much oil, but it might be a nice oil to run in the summer time! I might try it next!

Will do, plan on changing it later this evening. Will record engine before and after to see if it gets quieter / louder / no change.
 
Going to give it a try. I always ran Amsoil Signature 0-20 and my last change I didnt get any ordered so I went with Mobil1. I noticed a very slight tick since the change that I didnt have with Amsoil so For the same money, Im going to try the Rotella Truck 0-20 and see how it goes. Hopefully good and it will be easier and quicker to purchase vs ordering online.
 
Rotella is a brand name owned by Shell. Shell also makes Pennzoil,Quaker State and Formula Shell. The Rotella oil is rated API SN plus ( Gasoline oil ) It's just an advertised as a truck/ suv oil but it's not any better than the other brands they sell. I wouldn't be surprised if it's not just Pennzoil labeled as Rotella. Shell did this a few years ago when they bought Pennzoil/Quaker State and they used the Pennzoil Long Life truck oils to reformulate Rotella T diesel oils. It's all in advertising and marketing, who else is selling truck/suv oils for gasoline engines. So if you think your getting a better oil go ahead and buy it, you'll get a quality oil, but it's nothing but a wolf in sheep's clothing.
 
Mo1 is a group III Synthetic......Shell is likely Dino or combo of Dino/III. There's your $5. I won't run a lower grade than III as I go 7,500 between changes.

Yep, you are correct. However, not many people believe this.
 
iv run the regular rotella 15w40 in a turbo 5.3l GM and in 3 of my motorcycles for years, I wouldnt hesitate in using it next time if i see it

No, it's listed as a full synthetic product. Most likely re-badged Penn Platinum. Interestingly, it's also approved for use in Chrysler applications. Currently I am stuck using Pennzoil products in my Ram, may give this a try as it is cheaper but I don't see any promotions/rebates which typically make my Ultra Platinum changes cheap as heck.
 
I know this is all marketing for those that chimed in as such. From reading on BITOG, It's almost the same as PP with a healthier dose of Moly. What that means, I don't know. What I do know, it was less $ than M1. Put it in on Sunday. Will let everyone know what it looks like when I take it out in 3-5k miles at my next change.

The M1 I took out had 5500 miles on it and engine had become louder at idle. Of course, could just be my engine. After putting the RGT in, it quieted down, but it always seems quieter after the oil change.

Will update when I take it out.

I'm no oil expert but everything I've read it seems like its just hype, using the Rotella name that has diesel engine fame to sell oil to gas engines. I don't see the performance benefits it will offer. Its the same or more than Mobil 1 and Ultra Platinum. I'll stick with Mobil 1.

Usually the higher moly content will help make lifters quieter but not sure how that applies to a DOHC motor. On my Ram forum they stick with oils with high moly and zinc to quiet down the Hemi and it may help with reducing early lifter failure. On my '91 SHO the cam directly hit a shim that pushed down on the valve, so no lifters or lash adjusters to quiet down. I think the 1GR-FE is the same way.
