i would probably start by checking the slack on the line pressure cable 1st. Its easy and free. if that is slack, take the slack out and go for a drive. see if that gives you what your after...
that is what i did. was looking into shift kits till i read about the line pressure cable and like the throttle cable, found it loose with allot of slack in it. a few turns and were good to go.

The 01 and 02 model years use a solenoid for line pressure rather than a cable. The problem with adjusting that cable is it messes with how the trans downshifts so if it's too tight then you'll be dropping gears all the time.
The shift kit on the other hand increases line pressure across the board by changing the fluid passages and changing the spring rates in the accumulator pistons. This results in firmer and faster shifts but won't mess with when the transmission downshifts. I've also found it makes the shifts in 4 low much more predictable.

I remember reading a thread on here of someone who installed the trans go kit in an 01 or 02 and was having issues which seemed to be due to the drive by wire system on the late model third gens. From what he described, the Ecu cuts the throttle slightly during up shifts. Once the valve body was modified, the shift happens quicker and was causing the Ecu throttle cut to be mis timed with the upshift and was causing the problem of a slight throttle cut right after the upshift. Just a heads up.

i've installed a new trans almost a month now. though it's new, i want to install a kit to get firmer shifts. although new, it still shifts like the old one did; slow and just creeps into gear. i want to feel it shift. perhaps i'll wait until the warranty expires and install it. if anyone has done this on an 01-02, i would like to hear the results and if it is possible to install without issues.

I installed a TransGo shift kit in my '01 4Runner a few months ago. It was more than I anticipated but not horrible. I did it by myself - which I do not recommend. As for driving with it I love it. I have about 15,000 miles with it and have nothing but good experiences with it.

The shifts do take some getting used to. But after awhile you'll come to like it. I got in a stock 4runner a few weeks ago and hated how the gears just kinda mushed together. Jumped back in mine and loved how I can feel what the truck is doing
As far as doing the shift kit at home. It's not terrible as long as you go slow and are meticulous. I did mine by myself the day after I had my wisdom teeth removed and it was pretty easy. The trans go tech support line is very helpful if you do run into any issues

96-00 have a TV (throttle velocity) cable, and beside taking the slack out of the cable you don't want to make any adjustments without a trans pressure gauge because doing so changes the shift/performance characteristics of an auto trans, not always for the better. With an eye on the pressure you can safely take all the slack out and restore the right "preload" on the line. I suspect the soft, sluggish shifts many describe are due to this.
I'd be interested in test driving a modified trans 4runner as well as hearing from those with long term experience driving one.

The pickup in my signature has a modified 700R4 and drives as you describe, very firm and definitely shifts - almost like it wants to be driven aggressively, which I do, but the trans gets hot.
Do you monitor your trans temps?

I have a temp sensor in the pan and an aux fan on the cooler with a temp switch in the return line that kicks on at 185 degrees. Temps in the pan are generally in the 140 to 180 range. Occasionally 200 if I'm really pushing it in the snow. The fan really only kicks in when I'm really pushing it or if it's 90+ degrees out

Nice, what are your average ambient temps and how large is your aux cooler?

Average ambient temperature is probably in the upler70s during the summer and mid 20s in the winter. I'm running a b&m 70268 cooler fully bypassed from the radiator.
I actually think the shift kit decreased my transmission temps because it increases the overall fluid flow and clamps the clutches tighter
i have a shift kit in my camaro with the th350. At WOT it spins the tires during the upshifts. Really bangs into gear. the 4runner, i took the slack out of the cable and nothing more. i was amazed at how it shifted after that. but that was it and i left it alone after that.
but i have NO experience with a shift kit on the 4runner though.

Speaking of adjustments, I just put 2 full turns on my TV (transmission kickdown cable) and there's still some slack in it.
