Shift knob options for new 5 speed owner

I have recently converted my '02 to a 5 speed with mult-mode Tcase. The shift knob that came with the parts from the junk yard was worn out. Since them I have looking into options for the shift knob.

I've included a few pictures to show.

I'm partial between the classic FJ style ball and the leather Hilux knob. The short knob is from a later FJ.

I bought the TRD chinese knob from ebay. I couldn't get use to the shape since it was too bulky so I took the leather off it, trimmed it and put it on my stock knob.

The stitching turned out a bit crappy but its ok for what it is. This is an old pic. Since then I replaced the shift boot with a new leather one from ebay as well, and cleaned the cup holders:biggrin1:

I'll post another one with the new shift boot tomorrow.

Did you find a good source for the Hilux knob? I couldn't find one for a reasonable price when I looked for it.

I just ordered low range off road TEQ shift knob and a fancy 4wd knob.

Out of these I like the Hilux. It looks like my stock 99 knob. The early FJ looks like the one that came on a few 4runners. I dont like the white lettering.
I like the TRD billet one's but they're expensive like their oil & radiator caps.

I almost posted a thread like this last week about replacement shift knobs. I found a really nice TRD shift knob, but it's for Scion TC/ 2nd gen Tacoma. It's not cheap and I don't know if it fits 3rd gens or if it would even look right. Seems like good quality.

There was a group buy for aluminum shift knobs, but they were just for 5th gens. I got a hold of Joel Ellis and am trying to get a 5spd shift knob and t-case knob made similar to the t-case knob in these pictures.

It will be a few weeks before he has the materials to start this, but they're pretty nice and come in a few colors (including matte black, which is what I'm going with). I'm opting for the shift pattern for both knobs and no holes in the top, but you can get a TRD, 4R or TEQ too.

Those are nice. But the price is another story. It's a leg and arm.

There is a ton of options if you make them yourself. Drill and tap to 12x1.5 Cut off the head of a 12x1.5 bolt and put it in a drill press and work it while it spins. Here is my tacoma and 4runner

I have the same shift knob and I absolutely love it. Easy to grip and put my whole hand around it. Worth every penny. Bought it 5 years ago and it still looks new. Unlike my previous 4runner ('90) shift knob that was falling apart at the seems.

I had assumed mine was stock, stock or not, this one feels excellent. I also prefer leather over pretty much any other material. Especially metals, cold/hot temperatures will make you hate them real quick.

219k on my truck and this one is in perfect shape. Maybe I don't shift angry enough?

I found mine on ebay. It's not original however it was made it Thailand. I could not find one that is OEM in a 5 speed......
