Need new shifter knob

Well it's been bugging me since I bough the truck 2 months ago, the leather on my OEM knob is so worn down that I thought for a bit the OEM knobs only had leather coming halfway up the ball of it. Looks like the few actual OEMs that are left are going for bonkers prices (I saw one as high as 180ish on Ebay). Apparently though there are several OEM replicas that are out there for 15-20 5 Speed Leather Gear Shift Knob For Toyota 4Runner Hilux Prado For 3350420120-C0 | eBay

Anyone have experience with these and know what kind of quality they are? The pictures make them look like a pretty exact replica.

Also contemplating going a totally different aftermarket route, there are some pretty sweet looking wood knobs out there although it will definitely cost some money. Even found some options that had decals that look like the original as well as matching j shifter knobs. Still hesitant to drop 120 on something like that when I really just want something functional that isn't going to be one of those chintzy set screw ones you find at the parts stores (I'd be afraid those would rattle off if I'm offroading and then I'm having a bunch of fun ><).

I got a wood knob off of a hand tool and tapped it. Has worked great for years.

I bought an OEM replacement last year off toyotapartsdeal for around $75 if I recall. It looks and works just like the original.

I went to a yard and got a 2nd gen taco knob. Probably order those easier, it’s not leather, way more comfortable.

My 2 knobs are still original. I wonder how long that aftermarket knob holds up? Mine are alright. Most folks probably just put different knobs on.

Well I guess the rust belt will claim your metal while the desert claims my leather lol. Maybe I should learn to stitch leather like you learned to weld lol. Seriously thinking about turning my own knob out of wood now though. Anyone think it would be possible to chuck something small in my harbor freight drill press and do some ghetto wood turning lol.

Yep. It's a constant battle. Mostly our interiors are good. The paint will burn off the clear though if the rigs are constantly outside though. I have a few thar need repainted because of that.

Every environment has its plus and minuses.

As we don't get super hot here either.

Start turning the wood for a knob..

Make them. I like to choose the gnarliest piece of hardwood i can find. These are Lignum Vitae a coveted hardwood native to the caribbean

It's possible but you have to be careful not to put too much side load on the drill chuck or you can break the taper and it can pop the chuck off. I've done it on my drill press to turn a handle for a fire poker and a few small knobs for other things.
